My Laptop shuts down within 30 seconds after powering up. The fan will run at full speed before this happens.  I checked the vents and heat sink fins for dust or debris and they were clear.  How might I correct this problem?

Hello!

I am having similar problem where my system will just shutdown abruptly. I have two old clunkers (a 2006 & a 2010 both Macbook Pro 17") that I sort of temporarily remedying it by using a small electric fan that I let blows air directly to the vents and keeping the laptops at least 2 inch elevated for air circulation which somehow keeps the computer a little cooler and able to keep it from shutting down. Somehow after so many blue moons I've learned how to ignore the annoying sound of the fan blowing while I'm computing, unfortunately no choice right now until I install that fan coming from ebay...  hahaha.

I believe overtime, the cpu cooling fan has become so tired and inefficient to a point that it can no longer cool down the cpu and memory modules and that it triggers thermal shutdown. The only solution is to replace that cooling fan and the heat exchanger or atleast clean it and apply a fresh layer of a cooling adhesive designed for the heat sink. Actually, I just ordered one set of cooling fan and heat sink for my 2010 laptop and will figure out what to get and do for the other one.

Good luck on you!

Oops! I apologize...

Actually I was referring to two HP Pavilion 17" laptops (not Macbooks)  but I have just one MacBook Pro (2011) that somehow gets too hot to touch but it is not shutting down yet due to the heat. Later!

@ScottKAZ

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

  • Did this happen after a recent window or software update?
  • Have you made any hardware/software changes?
  • Have you tried any troubleshooting steps?
  • What is the product number of your device? Use this link to find it: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03754824
  • Did you make any changes on the settings of your PC prior to the issue?
  • When was the last time it worked fine?

Keep me posted for further assistance.
