So my problem is that my touchpad goes through  a loop of malfunction :

Firstly , the cursor I am using the touchpad to move suddenly stops , So I try to press the touchpad to refresh it , sometimes it works , sometimes it doesn't , assuming it doesn't here is what I do:

1) close the lid then open it again ( this barely works and it actually makes the ELAN input device dissapear from mice and other pointing devices and the cursor disappears off the screen completely which forces me to use a USB mouse)

2) Hard reset ( hold power button for a couple of seconds after removing the charger then restart )

3) step no.2 but I remove the device of the I2C HID device knowing that windows will replace the driver of the device when i restat my laptop ( this problem causes the ELAN input device to disappear completely from mice and other..)

Is there anything I can do to permanently fix this problem ? ( all these steps either work TEMPORARILY or don't work at all )

Hi @korez

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand the concern regarding the touchpad repeatedly malfunctioning and the ELAN input device disappearing after certain actions. Since the I2C HID Device is showing a Code 10 error, the issue is tied to the driver layer. To address this permanently, follow the below structured set of steps that ensure both hardware initialization and driver integrity.

Perform a Hard Reset

This clears temporary memory and forces Windows to rescan hardware.

Shut down the computer completely

Disconnect the AC adapter and external devices

Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds

Reconnect the AC adapter and power on

Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics

Verifies if the touchpad hardware is functioning correctly.

Power on → Press Esc repeatedly → F2 → Component Tests → Mouse/Touchpad

Run the test and follow on-screen instructions

If the test fails, it confirms a hardware or driver issue

Update Drivers via HP App

Most Reliable Fix

Ensures the latest HP-certified drivers are installed.

Open HP App → Diagnose & Fix

Allow the tool to automatically repair driver issues

Install the latest touchpad/I2C HID driver from HP’s support page

Restart the computer after updates

Check Windows Updates

Critical updates often include fixes for input devices.

Windows Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update

Install all critical and optional updates

Restart after updates are applied

Verify Touchpad Settings

Ensures the touchpad is enabled in Windows.

Windows Settings → Devices → Touchpad

Confirm the touchpad is enabled

Adjust sensitivity or gestures if needed

By completing these steps, you ensure both the hardware and driver layers are properly synchronized. If diagnostics confirm hardware failure, service may be required, but following this guide first rules out all software causes.

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Hi @Hawks_Eye
Thanks for the reply , and I deeply apologize for my late reply as I was really busy the last few days , here is what happened after I followed each of these steps

1) Hard Reset : didn't do anything

2) Hardware diagnostics : I couldn't find the "component test" ( From the picture )

3) HP app fix : same thing as *2

4) windows updates : I just updated it , I am up to date

I am considering this is a hardware problem , do you think so too?

I apologize once again for my late reply

 Thanks
