HP Envy DV6
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I had a hard drive crash on my HP Envy DV6 laptop.  I bought a solid state drive and I am having troubles installing Windows 10.   It goes through the install, however, every time it reboots it wants to start the install again.  If I remove the USB, I get the blue screen of death (BSOD).

I have talked to computer experts and they said I was doing it right.  I am so lost for solutions now  😕

Hoping someone here can help me.

Here is what happened:

  1. Replaced hard drive with SSD
  2. Created a USB installation media (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10)
  3. Plug USB in and starts the install.
  4. After it goes through all of the steps (copy win files to finishing up), it says it needs to restart.
  5. After restart, it goes to the begining screen (language, time, keyboard) and basically takes me back to the install again.

If I unplug the USB and attempt to reboot, I get the BSOD:

Recovery

Your PC/Device needs to be repaired

The application of operating system couldnt be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors.

File:  \Windows\system32\hal.dll

Error Code: 0xc000000f

After I went through the same steps again, I got the same BSOD error, however, it had the following file name:

File:  \Windows\system32\winload.efi

Error Code: 0xc000000f

I have played with boot order in the bios and secure boot seems to be disabled.

Anyone out there know what is happening?  I was thinking of trying to see if I had the old operating system disk to install everything again (Windows 8).   Not sure i an find it tho.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

Try installing with legacy boot. You will need to switch on legacy boot in Bios. Restart and go into Bios (insert the pendrive before restart). Now if you go into boot order there should be two options for the pendrive, one efi install and one normal or legacy install. Try installing windows 10 in non efi mode.

Once you get to the screen where it says install choose custom install and delete all the partitions which have been created during the failed installations. Now install in unallocated space. You are correct to remove the pendrive when the computer reboots.

Hope it helps,

David

Thank you for the quick reply and support.  I really appreciate it!

I tried what you said and I didnt have any luck.  Just incase I did something wrong, I will post the steps here:

1)  F10 for bios

2) Switch to Legacy Support

3) Restarted and go into BIOS again (with USB drive in)

4) At this point, the UEFI and Legacy Boot order are both active.  I can not find a way to deactivate the UEFI.  (See screen shot)

5) Reorded the Legacy boot order to have the USB above Notebook hard drive.  [get stuck on blue screen on restart]

6) Reorded the Legacy boot order to have the USB below Notebook hard drive.  [get stuck on black screen on restart]

BTW, under the main menu on the bios (InsydeH2O Setup Utility Rev 3.7), it sais the factory installed OS is Win8.  I upgraded to 10 when it came out.  Could this be the problem?  Do I need to install Win8 instead?  If so, can I still get the free upgrade to Win 10?  (not even sure I have the original disk)
