Hello, I would like to update from Windows 10 to 11 (home). This computer passed the upgrade checklist except for the TPM 2. I went into BIOS and everything was already enabled. I tried the update again and it still says I don't have TPM 2 enabled. When I got to run: tpm it says, "Compatible Trusted Platform Module cannot be found on this computer, Verify that computer has 1.2 TPM or later and it is turned on in the BIOS"

In the Device Manager, under security devices, I have the "trusted platform module 2.0," but it has the little yellow warning exclamation point. When I click on that, it says this device cannot start  (code 10), A protocol error was detected between the driver and the device. When I hit update driver, it says it up to date.

Help would be appreciated.

@Kbucketofwings, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding TPM 2.0 for Windows 11 Upgrade!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

If you're encountering issues with TPM 2.0 while attempting to upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11, here are some steps that might help resolve the problem:

Verify BIOS Settings:

  • Restart your computer and access the BIOS/UEFI settings by pressing F10 or Esc soon after turning on the computer (depending on your device model).
  • Navigate to the Security tab and ensure that the TPM Device option is set to Available, and the TPM State is Enabled.
  • If there's an option to Clear TPM, ensure it is not invoked without reason, as this can reset the TPM and cause loss of keys.

Check for Hidden TPM Settings:

  • In some BIOS setups, the TPM settings might be hidden. You should unhide them by setting the TPM Device option from Hidden to Available.

Update the BIOS:

  • Ensure that your BIOS is up to date. Visit the HP support website and download the latest BIOS update available for your model.
  • Follow instructions to update the BIOS, as sometimes TPM functionality issues can be fixed via BIOS/UEFI updates.

TPM Troubleshooting in Windows:

  • Open the Device Manager in Windows, and look to see if there are any issues flagged for the TPM device, such as driver errors. You can try updating the driver through Device Manager.
  • Run the TPM.msc command again, and if it still reports a problem, you could try following steps in the Settings under Update & Security -> Windows Security -> Device Security -> Security processor troubleshooting.

Windows Updates:

  • Make sure you’ve installed the latest updates for Windows 10. Some issues related to TPM are resolved in later patches of Windows.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Hello, still no luck getting the TPM 2.0 to work. As a result I am unable to update to Windows 11.

All windows updates are completed.

I've updated the BIOs/UEFI via the HP website. When one of those was updating, I thought I saw something about tpm 2.0 when the updating was happening, but nothing has changed since.

In the device manager, there is a Trusted Platform Module 2.0 with an exclamation point.

“This device cannot start. (Code 10)...a protocol error was detected between the driver and the device”

I have updated and uninstalled the driver (restarted, etc.)

When I go to RUN  tpm.msc

“Compatible TPM cannot be found”

“Compatible Trusted Platform Module cannot be found on this computer. Verify that this computer has a 1.2 TPM or later and it is turned on in the BIOS.”

When I got to settings - updates and security - device security - there is no option for a security processor. However, when I search for “security processor” I do get a page about the TPM, but there is not information about it (nothing about versions and under storage is says “not ready”).

When I go to BIOS (both esc and F10), I go to the security tab and see the three TPM choices. TPM Hidden, Enable and Clear.  TPM is set to “available” and “enable” - the last one is confusing because I don’t know if that means it is enabled or that’s the command. It is either going to be left on “enable” or “disable,” so I’m assuming when it says “enable” on the BIOS page it is enabled. I’ve tried rebooting with “disable” selected too and nothing different happens.

I’ve tried everything you listed here. I even cleared the TPM in BIOs as a last resort and that also did not change anything.

Does the HP Docks and Displays diagnostic do anything with TPM? I haven’t run that yet.

Other things I’ve tried:

HP PC Hardware Diagnostics - BIOS is up to date.

HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI - I’ve run the TPM test and it fails. Product ID 6TK84UA#ABA

Failure ID: 9E67VG-A2WCP5-MFPU2J-08L503

Thanks
