Hello,
Here is the follow-up:
- You cannot restore your files once HDD goes "bad". You could try to boot the machine using some live rescue CD based on Linux but chances are very small
- You cannot restore to factory default before replacing the HDD as the old one is faulty. You need to insert the new one and then restore as the information is indeed stored on the (new) HDD
- If you know how and where from, you can purcase the very same HDD - Part# 678312-002
If not, just use some as suggested above and as explained in the Maitanance and Service guide.

Yes , it can be fixed .. you will have to call the HP Tech Support .. Number is 1-800-474-6836 .. based on the options, they will either pick up the computer for repair OR send a in house tech .. All these depends on the warranty status of your computer.
Regards,
Ashok

Sent a separate response also, Thanks a Million! I am so grateful for ALL your help, so patient with someone that knows very little about all this computer stuff. Thanks to you, I'm figuring it all out. Have a great rest of the week & weekend. I will definitely update you. Gina

I tried them, since my PC is now 6 months out of warranty, they want $300.00. FYI: this is my 2nd hard drive already in 2 yrs., isn't this a little crazy? This will be my 3rd, I'm placing the hard drive myself, thanks to a previous responder who was so patient with explaining everything and showing me how to go about it. Thank you for your response.
