Microsoft Windows 11

Last night, my HP laptop was having trouble updating and got into a restarting loop where it couldn't finish the job.

At one point, the culprit was discovered and was apparently an outdated BIOS problem.

I went to the HP site to get an updated BIOS file and let HP identify the computer and was directed to a BIOS file to download and install.

The file was downloaded, but when I went to install the updated BIOS my HP laptop informed me it was not compatible with the system, so here I am on the HP support site to see if someone can help me solve this mess.

I pulled up the system information for that computer and below is some of the information that was listed which hopefully is enough to help resolve the problem.

OS NAME: Microsoft Windows 11 Home

VERSION: 10.0.26200 Build 26200

SYSTEM MODEL: HP Laptop 17z-cp200

SYSTEM TYPE: x64-based PC

BIOS VERSION DATE: INSYDE F.16, 5/16/24

SMBIOS VERSION: 3.4

EMBEDDED CONTROLLER VERSION: 41.23

BIOS MODE: UEFI

Can anyone help me with this?

Thank you!

Wanted to add this additional information to my original post, My computer uses Mcafee antivirus and it was not turned off when attempting to install the BIOS update.

Could that have been the problem?

Hi @Stucky

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

The BIOS update process on your HP Laptop 17z‑cp200 is failing because the package offered by HP’s auto‑detection tool does not match the system’s current BIOS environment. Your machine is running INSYDE BIOS F.16 (dated 05/16/24), and the installer correctly flagged the downloaded file as incompatible. This indicates that either the update file was misidentified for your product family or HP has not yet released a newer BIOS version for this exact model. Attempting to force installation of a mismatched BIOS can corrupt the firmware, so the block is a safeguard rather than a fault.

Since your HP Laptop 17z‑cp200 was running McAfee during the update attempt, the installer may have been blocked or altered by its real‑time protection. To further assist you I would request you to please share me the Product number you are using.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hi @Stucky

Thank you for responding.

I understand that the latest BIOS version is not being installed. Based on the product information available, I can see that the latest BIOS version for this unit is F.15 Rev.A (20.7 MB), released on May 4, 2026.

At this time, I do not see any other BIOS updates published for this unit.

Have a good day

Hi!

Thanks so much for getting back to me.

Can you provide me a link to the HP page with that specific BIOS update?

I have been writing you on a different computer than the one with the BIOS issue, so if you can provide a link for me when I am on the other computer I'll be able to go right there and download the correct file.

Thanks so much!

Hi,

Thank you for responding.

I understand you'd like a direct link to the BIOS update so you can download it from another computer. To ensure I provide the correct BIOS package and avoid any compatibility issues, please share the exact HP Serial Number of the affected system. Once I have that information, I'll provide the official HP BIOS download page and the specific BIOS file applicable to your device.

Have a good day

Hi!

Was so glad to hear from you!

The product number previously provided was the the product number for the computer that needs the BIOS update.

67K39AV

I was a little confused though about something.

Can you explain  why the BIOS on the computer that needs a BIOS update is version 16 and the BIOS update file you said was the current one released this year is 15?

I tend to assume when something has an update issued it's a higher number.

Maybe it's different with BIOS updates and would love to understand how they may be different than other types of software updates .

Thanks so much for your help I really appreciate it!

Looking forward to hearing from you again. 🙂

Hi Again,

You're an an HP employee, so I gather you'd really know your stuff.😊

Having not heard from you for a couple days hoping you'd send me a link to the BIOS Update page that I could then access quickly and get downloaded on the computer that needs it;  I did an internet search for the BIOS Update you provided in your last post to me, and it said the following:

  • Version: F.15 Rev.A

  • Release date: August 9, 2021

  • Purpose: Adds Windows 11 compatibility and other improvements

That update matches what you told me but is for 2021.

The one you provided for me you stated was for May, 2026.

If you are unable to help me with this please tell me who can.

Thank you!

Hi @Stucky

Thank you for responding.

I understand the confusion regarding the BIOS version information. Based on your verification, the BIOS update you located is Version F.15 Rev.A with a release date of August 9, 2021, whereas the BIOS version previously referenced appears to have a different release timeline. To avoid providing incorrect information and to ensure we identify the exact BIOS package applicable to your system, I would request that you please share the serial number (S/N) of the HP device and the version of Operating system via private message.

Once the serial number is provided, I will be able to verify the exact product configuration and direct you to the correct HP support page containing the latest BIOS updates available for your specific system. This will help ensure that you download and install the appropriate BIOS version without any issues.

I apologize for any confusion caused and appreciate your patience. Please share the serial number, and I will be happy to assist further.

Have a good day.
