Hi @Pjmash,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
When USB ports on a laptop are not functioning properly with certain devices but still work with others (such as a phone for file transfers), the issue could stem from several possible causes. Here are some troubleshooting steps to help you diagnose and potentially resolve the problem.
Check Device Compatibility
- Ensure that the USB devices (flash drive, external keyboard, or mouse) are compatible with your laptop and are working properly on another computer.
Inspect Physical Ports
- Examine the USB ports on your laptop for any visible damage or debris. Sometimes dust or physical damage can affect connectivity.
Restart Your Laptop
- A simple restart can sometimes resolve hardware recognition issues.
Check Device Manager
- Windows:
- Press Win + X and select "Device Manager."
- Expand the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" section.
- Look for any entries with a yellow exclamation mark, indicating a problem.
- Right-click on the problematic device and select "Update driver" or "Uninstall device" and then restart your laptop.
Update USB Drivers
- Visit the HP support website and download the latest USB drivers for your specific laptop model.
Power Management Settings
- Sometimes, power management settings can disable USB ports to save power.
- Windows:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers."
- Right-click each USB Root Hub and select "Properties."
- Go to the "Power Management" tab.
- Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."
- Repeat this for all USB Root Hubs.

Test in Safe Mode
- Boot your laptop in Safe Mode to see if the USB devices work. If they do, a third-party application or driver might be causing the conflict.
BIOS/UEFI Settings
- Access your laptop's BIOS/UEFI settings during startup (usually by pressing F2, F10, Del, or Esc key) and ensure that USB ports are enabled.
Operating System Issues
- Make sure your operating system is up to date. Sometimes, an OS update can fix hardware compatibility issues.
Hardware Issues
- If none of the above steps work, there could be a hardware issue with the USB ports themselves.
By systematically going through these steps, you should be able to identify and potentially fix the issue with your USB ports.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
