I’m trying to install Ubuntu Linux on my HP ZBook Studio x360 G5 Convertible Workstation, but I keep getting a message during the installer saying that Intel RST (Rapid Storage Technology) must be disabled.
What I did and what I experienced:
I entered the BIOS and disabled Intel Optane (which also disables RST).
After saving and exiting, the system freezes on the HP logo screen during boot.
I cannot enter BIOS again after this freeze. I have to remove the battery and CMOS to reset the BIOS and regain access.
This happens every time I disable Optane/RST.
My system does not actually have an Intel Optane module, yet the BIOS shows the option.
Other things I tried:
Booting from a clean Linux USB stick with a brand new SSD installed.
Fully formatted the original drive and attempted a clean install of Ubuntu.
No version of Windows is installed on this machine, so I can't disable RST through Windows.
Tried all of this on wireless connection, though internet is not relevant to the issue.
The problem:
Even with a new SSD and no Windows, the Ubuntu installer detects RST is enabled and refuses to proceed.
But disabling RST/Optane causes the laptop to freeze on boot and lock me out of BIOS.
I’m stuck in this loop, and I need to run Linux for work.
Thank you for any help — I really appreciate your time.
