HP - 15-ba064nl
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am trying to restore a friend's laptop Windows10 Home x64, but have some problems. The laptop start and the hardware is ok, but it freezes during the boot up and i have to shutdown using long pressure on the power button. Once i restart it's impossible to access to the recovery console; so i tried to boot Windows from USB or DVD, but the BIOS doesn't recognize the Windows imadge on the USB or the DVD and Bypass them to the installed OS and freezes again.

Bios Boot settings are correct and secure boot deactivated, i don't understand where is the problem.

Laptop HP - 15-ba064nl

Product number Y6G74EA#ABZ

System board 81FA

BIOS Version F.09

I would try a bios upgrade from USB, but the new BIOS version downloaded from HP website F.36 doesn't  show the correct ID of my system board, only 81F5, 81F7 and 81F9.

Any suggestions?

Thank you in advance

Matteo

As already stated the HP Cloud Recovery tools was no useful.

Anyway i came across the problem by myself, i followed this steps:

  1. copy the Microsoft Reserved Partition on usb key from a Windows PC correctly operating;
  2. on the laptop not operating  boot with a Linux Live USB;
  3. with GPARTED formatted NTFS and resized the Microsoft Reserved Partition (flag:msfres) and the windows partition (flag:msfdata);
  4. copy the Microsoft Reserved Partition from Usb Key to laptop partition;
  5. shutdown and restarted from hard disk;
  6. finally i was able to enter the Windows Recovery Environment and started a Restore Entire System activity.

Solved by myself.

Sorry HP, but this forum is really no useful.

Welcome to HP Community

I have gone through your Post and would like to help

May I know where did you get the USB drive to reinstall Windows?

Did you enable legacy boot after disabling secure boot?

I suggest you run a System Test to confirm the Hardware Functionality first

- Shut down the Notebook completely
- Turn it back on, then tap the Esc key repeatedly until the Startup menu screen is displayed.
- Press F2 to select System Diagnostics.
- Click System Test

If all the Tests pass, try a System Recovery by creating a new USB Recovery Media if you haven't do so yet

The HP Cloud Recovery Tool allows you to download recovery software to a USB drive. You can use the downloaded recovery image file inorder to install Windows operating system. Click here: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c06162205 to Use the HP Cloud Recovery Tool (Windows 10, 7)

Click here: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04758961#AbT3 to perform a System Recovery (Windows 10)

Thank you

@ KrazyToad: Thank you for your interest in my post

I ran the system test as first step, as it's possible to start BIOS/UEFI and System Diagnostic, as you can see in the screenshot it gave an error:

    Matteo113_0-1589387044543.jpeg

All of the hardware tests seemed to be OK, but not the windows installation, i tried to start the Recovery Environment but it didn't start; entering the Start Menu with Esc key it's possible to start F1.System information, F2 System Diagnostics, F9.Boot device options, F10 BIOS setup, F.11System Recovery. Unfortunately the System Recovery stuck on the HP logo or on a black screen.

 I created a great number o USB stick and tried to boot from USB in every possible condition:

  1. UEFI, secure boot on;
  2. UEFI, secure boot off;
  3. Legacy boot

Unfortunately for reasons i can't understand is possible to boot with Linux Live USB distro (i have succeded with Elementary OS, Feren OS and Boot-Repair-Disk) but not with Windows based USB stick, i created:

  1. HP Cloud Recovery Tool USB;
  2. Windows 10-x64 USB using Microsoft media-creation-tool;
  3. Hiren Boot CD

The linux live USB boot on, on the contrary the Windows/HP USB didn't start and the PC tried to boot Windows 10 from HD, i don't know why.

In the linux environment, i was capable to have a vision of the hard disk and you can see “Unknown Filesystem” in Microsoft Reserved Partition and some kind of warning in the Windows partition.

In this situation, the best solution i think is to make a System Recovery (no matter personal data stored on the drive), only.. i don’t know how to do, as a matter of fact i am not capable to start HP Cloud Recovery Tool USB stick.

There is some useful workaround to start the recovery USB?

Thank you for posting back.

The HP Cloud Recovery Tool allows you to download recovery software to a USB drive. You can use the downloaded recovery image file in order to install the Windows operating system.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
