Microsoft Windows 11

Hello there,

Had to replace a broken nvme drive and now I'm unable to install w11, neither custom nor default installation from ms site. After initializing the boot and win dialog to click "Install now" it opens broswe dialog to install the missing driver (media) thus not recognizing the storage. On device itself the rom rst revision is 18.31.3.5434 but regardles which drive I choose (and have tried at least 20 different options) it always falis to install and continue further with win11 installation.

The funny topic, win10 installation works fine without any additioanl driver needed.

Any clue how to sove this?

I would not like to install w10 and then upgrade to w11 as have custom build w10 and w11.

Regards,

Miro

@kelam5,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

One thing to check is that your TPM (2.0) is enabled in your BIOS:

To upgrade to Windows 11, you need to enable TPM on your HP EliteDesk 800 G6 Mini by following these instructions:

  1. Turn on your Mini and press the F10 key to start to the BIOS setup menu.

  2. On the Security (or Advanced) tab, check whether your TPM Device status is Hidden.

  3. Toggle the TPM device status to Available.

  4. Change TPM State to Enabled.

  5. Press F10 to exit, and then click Yes to save changes. If prompted, press F1 to confirm the changes and restart the computer.

TPM is enabled, all bios config params are aligned as they should for w10 and w11 retrospectively.

Still have issue when w11 installation needs to access rst storage device.

@kelam5,

My friend, it appears that the Windows 11 installer is not recognizing your NVMe drive due to the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) controller requiring specific drivers during installation. Here's how you can resolve this issue:

1. Download the Intel RST Driver:

2. Prepare the Driver for Installation:

  • After downloading, extract the driver files to a USB flash drive.
  • Ensure the files are in the root directory of the USB drive for easy access.

3. Load the Driver During Windows 11 Installation:

  • Begin the Windows 11 installation using your installation media.
  • When you reach the screen asking "Where do you want to install Windows?", and no drives are listed, select "Load Driver".
  • Insert the USB flash drive containing the Intel RST driver.
  • Browse to the USB drive and select the appropriate driver.
  • Once loaded, your NVMe drive should appear in the list of available drives.

Alternative Solution: Switch to AHCI Mode:

If you prefer not to use the Intel RST driver, you can switch the storage controller mode from RST to AHCI in the BIOS:

  • Restart your computer and enter the BIOS setup (this is usually done by pressing a key like F2, F10, or Delete during startup).
  • Navigate to the storage configuration section.
  • Change the SATA mode from "Intel RST" to "AHCI".
  • Save and exit the BIOS.
  • Proceed with the Windows 11 installation.

Caution: Switching to AHCI mode may require a reinstallation of the operating system and could lead to data loss if not done correctly. Ensure all important data is backed up before making this change.

By following these steps, you should be able to successfully install Windows 11 on your HP EliteDesk 800 G6 Mini PC.

Kind Regards,

Unfortunately, I don't think so.

I declined to try and answer this post yesterday because I wasn't exactly sure what the problem was.

There are two driver errors when you go to install Windows.

One is 'a media driver is missing.'  That is not related to missing storage controller drivers.

That error normally means that the installation media is not working correctly.

How did you make the W11 installation media?

With the media creation tool from Microsoft?

With the ISO file and transferred to a USB flash drive with Rufus?

Some other way?  (not recommended)

The other one is 'Windows cannot find any drives to install on.' That is the one where the storage controller driver needs to be installed at that point.

Neither W10 nor W11 needs to have the IRST drivers installed on an 800 G6 since they have the Intel 10th gen core processors.

The IRST driver is only needed for the 11th > 13th gens.

Suggestions to correct a media driver is missing error:

Use the HP cloud recovery client software to create a bootable W11 recovery drive:
