HP Spectre X360 Covnertible 15-bl0XX
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Trying to install Fall Creators update on my Spectre X360-15 but the install fails.  Always end up with a blue screen stating Unexpecgted Kernel Mode Trap Error and the machine reverts back to the previous version of Windows. No memory or file system problems.  No USB attachments and have tried doing this in Safe Mode as well with the same result.

Thank you for posting on HP Forums,

Riddle_Decipher is at your service.

As I understand you have an unexpected kernel mode trap error on your windows 10,

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

Have you installed all latest version of the windows & HP programs?

While you respond to that, here's what you need to know:

Cause 1: Faulty RAM module

The most common cause of this error is a faulty RAM module that periodically gives read/write errors. If that’s the case, then it is advisable to scan the system memory and replace the faulty RAM module.

Cause 2: Corrupt or outdated device drivers

Sometimes the device drivers may become mis-configured, corrupt or outdated. That may also happen after a Windows update or a Windows downgrade from a newer system to an older one.

That said, I recommend you install all windows update and then, Click here to find and install all update for your hardware components, including BIOS.

Then, Run the Extensive Test to identify any hardware malfunctions:

  1. Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.

  2. Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
  3. On the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu, click System Tests.

  4. Click Extensive Test.

  5. Click Run once, or Loop until error.

While the test is running, the time remaining and test result for each component are shown on the screen. The test can take 2 or more hours to complete.

   NOTE:

If the diagnostics are not available when using the F2 menu, run the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics from a USB drive. To download the latest version of the diagnostics, go to the HP Hardware Diagnostics website. For instructions, see Testing from an external USB device.

Keep me posted,

If the information I've provided was helpful,

give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,

that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!

Good Luck.

Hi Riddle-Decipher:

I have run the utility that checks for memory problems.  It did not find any problems, and as you stated, it took a very long time to complete.  All the drivers have been updated, both via the HP Support Assistance and via Windows Update.   I have even checked to see if some of the more common devices have updated drivers, through the Device Manager.

Thanks,

Lifou

@Lifou

Thank you for responding,

It's great to have you back 😉

Once all the drivers and software updates are installed from Windows,

The fall creators update should go through without a hassle,

If you still have issues, I suggest you create a new user account and retry,

If that doesn't work either, Please create a backup of all your personal data & files on an external storage device,

Then, perform a system refresh: Click here for steps.

If you would like to thank me for my efforts to help you,

feel free to give me a virtual high-five by clicking the 'Thumbs Up' icon below,

Followed by clicking on the "Accept as solution" button.

Have a great day!

Try to Test RAM memory on your Windows system with the help of an inbuilt Memory Diagnostics Tool

Follow the below-given steps:

Step 1: Click on the Start -> Search box and search for the Memory Diagnostics Tool

Sep 2: From the search result, right-click on the Memory Diagnostics Tool and choose Run as Administrator

Step 3: After it, you have to follow the on-screen instructions to start the diagnostic process
