HP 250 G5 Notebook PC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi. I recently got this unexpected store exception error lately, which looks like on the screenshot below. I often simply close the lid, and then the laptop would go to sleep. After I open the lid, and sometimes this screen would should up. Actually, I think this is the second or third time I saw it. I haven't tried to change these settings for what happens when I close the lid, although I suspect that might be a (pretty bad) workaround.

What I suspect to be the cause of this issue is the recently released Fall Creators Update for Windows 10. I haven't seen this bluescreen before.

What might this be related to? Should we expect some kind of update from HP which would fix this problem, or perhaps from Microsoft with the next update? Or should we try to do something ourselves? If so, what would you suggest.

My OS is Windows 10 Pro (64-bit). If you need any further details, I would gladly provide them.

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards!

Samir

Hello @gariša

Thank you for following the instructions carefully and strictlu - it's much appreciated.

I am sorry it took me so long to reply. I did review the memory dump file but unfortunately, it didn't reveal any useful information to me. The bug appears to be caused by a Windows component which brings us back to the start point.  The error has a code which in your case is 0x154 and its description from Microsoft is very basic, unfortunately >> https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/debugger/bug-check-0x154--unexpected-store...

It may be related to the Fall Creators Update but who knows. I can't be sure unless you perform a clean Win installation.

Hello @gariša

Welcome to the HP Support forum.

This is known as Blue Screen of Death (in Windows) or known also as kernel panic in other operating system. This is done by Window to prevent further operations -> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Screen_of_Death

It can be caused by hardware drivers/errors or software errors with drivers. It might also be some bug in Windows (e.g. caused by the Fall Creators Upgrade 1709).

To be more precise one need to check the Memory dump file.

Once BSOD happens, Windows automatically dumps the memory into file(s) for analysis.

1) Please, read these articles and then adjust the settings in Control Panel:

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/ff542953%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

http://www.howtogeek.com/196672/windows-memory-dumps-what-exactly-are-they-for/

2) Please, enable Kernel Memory dump file

3) Uncheck "Automatically restart" option with System failure

IC675119.png

4) Simulate the situation and dump file will be generated.

5) Once computer restarts, using Windows Explorer/My Computer, go to C:\  , find MEMORY.dmp file

6) Upload this file to a file sharing service of your choice (Dropbox, iCloud, Google Drive, OneDrive, etc...) and share this link/URL with me, please, so that I can get it.

I will check the dump file and advise further. Thank you!

Hi, IT_WinSec,  thank you for your assistance. I have set everything as told, and the next time I face this issue, I will share it with you. I suspect that will happen today.

Hi, thank you for your advice! I hope I'll be able to avoid clean install. But if it comes to that, what do you think about resetting PC from the settings? It seems pretty simple, I wouldn't even need a disk. I hope it does the same job. There is even an option to move to an older build, but I'm not sure if I could ensure not to install FCU again, at least not in the first few months...

Right now I have a lot of other work to do, so I won't be doing any of this until Friday. I have an exam on Thursday. Thank you very much for helping, I will certainly check out everything you showed me. I hope some of these easier things you pointed me to will fix it.😊

Hi @gariša

Thank you for the reply.

Do you have Windows 10 Home or Pro - with Pro you can delay updates:

- feature upgrades such as FCU for up to 1 year

- ongoing montly updates for up to 180 days

For Windows 10 Home, there are some other temporary tricks.

Check this out >> https://www.windowscentral.com/how-delay-windows-10-fall-creators-update-while-still-getting-securit...

Be quick, you only have 7 days (from the date it was installed) to revert back to the previous build before FCU.

I have Pro. I didn't know I am able to delay it for up to 1 yeah, and keep getting monthly updates for CU. Thanks for the tip! I only hope I didn't come up with this too late... I've installed FCU on last Thursday I think. I won't be able to try it until afternoon.

I just wanted to let you know that I have decided not to go back to Creators Update. I don't actually know if I was able to do it today, but nevertheless it seemed to me that it might require almost as much work as reinstalling entire OS and installing all my programs over again.

So for now I just installed all the latest drivers for my laptop using HP Suport Assistant. That's a pretty convenient tool I must say!

Also, somehow it seems to me that HP is a reliable company, and if there is an issue with FCU on their machines, I think I can count on them to deliver us an update with a solution. This is my first HP laptop, so I don't know whether I'm right about that, but it seems to me I'm not wrong.

I will keep you posted whether updating drivers as you suggested did the job. (Though there are few more things you suggested as well, but one step in a time.)

I'd recommend you check for any driver updates here >> https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers

Hi, I just wanted to let you know that it appears that we have solved the issue by applying all driver updates. Only I didn't do it manually, but instead I did it with HP Support Assistant.

I still haven't marked your message as the solution only because I want to make sure that the BSoD won't reappear. I'll just wait until this weekend before I do it. But, before applying these updates I would see the BSoD at least once a day, but if I use the laptop all day. I haven't used the laptop like that any time until Wednesday (when I updated the drivers if I'm not mistaken), but I did use it a lot, and like I said: So far so good.

Cheers! And thanks for helping! 🙂
