Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Greetings,

This is the first time I have used this community, and I am looking forward to seeing what sage advice I can glean from the wisdom in this gathering.

Our benevolence agency received this laptop as a donation. On it was a digitally (OEM) activated OEM install of Windows 10 Home, 64-bit. My hopes were to remove the old hard drive, return it untouched to the donator/prior owner, and install a new SSD, then install Windows 10 Pro. Thus is my issue: no matter what I do, the installer refuses to let me choose to install Windows 10 Pro, and never even offers the selection page to do so in the process - WIN 10 Home is the default and ONLY selection performed. My suspicion is that an OEM-activated Windows means it will always be what it is in OEM state until HP releases or deactivates the OEM Microsoft product key, releasing it from some tethered state as scribed on the motherboard.

Does anyone know how to get this unit deactivated by HP, OR let me know what is going on if my suspicion is incorrect?

Thank you in advance,

dlcatftwin

You simply install Windows Home first, it will use its keys in BIOS to activate Windows Home. Now you can use Windows 10 Pro key to activate Windows 10 Pro and run Windows updates, it will fix license for you.

Thank you Banhein for your gracious answer. Did as suggested and all is well.

My only gripe (with Microsoft) is that you cannot actually set up the unit in WIN 10 Home unless you log into or create an MS account - but this was fixed by simply changing product codes and end-user accounts. The unit is now ready for domain use.

Many thanks again,
