Notebook - 14-an009na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I have recently suffered the Unmountable Boot Volume BSOD on my Notebook 14-an009na. The laptop is less than 12 months old and came with Windows 10 (64 bit) pre-installed.

All available advice online tells me to create either a bootable USB or DVD using the Windows Media creation tool. I have attempted to create both using both methods allowed by the tool i.e. allowing the tool to create a bootable media itself, and also by downloading the ISO image and separately burning this to both.

My issue is that neither seems to actually do anything when I then attempt to boot from either USB or DVD.

I have attempted this with Secure Boot both enabled and disabled, and I have also adjusted the boot priorties accordingly in the BIOS.

Each time, my laptop gives the impression that it's attempting something, however after a couple of minutes I eventually just get a blank screen and the DVD drive stops whirring or the USB light goes out.

The HP system diagnostics test tells me thefollowing

Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILED

Failure ID: 9U02LK-8B68N4-MFGK7G-60U003

Any advices would be greatly appreciated.

Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILED=  the hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will replace it. If not a retail 2.5" laptop SATA hard drive can be used-Western Digital,Seagate,Toshiba, etc.

Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use HP Recovery Media to install Windows. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd. If you plan to use the free download from Microsoft it will not require same size hdd as original.

Btw-no amount of setting boot devices in BIOS will allow to boot from USB or DVD. You must use F9 immediately after powering on to choose Boot device. (Which is still not going to help since the hard drive has failed and Windows can't install)

Thanks.

Not exactly what I wanted to hear for obvious reasons but the laptop is still in warranty so at least that's something.
