Victus by HP 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-r0000 (76T08AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I have a brand new HP Victus R0001NT laptop that displays some weird situations, and I do not know whether they are normal. HP replaced my old device because of similar problems, claiming a motherboard issue. I'd be more than happy for any solutions, and I'd like to know how serious the issues are to decide whether I should return the device. The issues are about the "fans" and the "battery."

     The issue about the "fans":

- They work perfectly; however, when I enter the BIOS menu, after a few seconds, they restart themselves and start spinning faster (approximately 3800-4000 RPM). Then, when I enter Windows, I monitor the CPU temperature to around 60 degrees. In the replaced product, this issue was much more aggressive (they were spinning at maximum speed as soon as I entered BIOS). I am worried about another motherboard problem. What are the ideal temperature and normal fan behavior during the BIOS menu? I have never experienced anything like this with any of my products except these Victus devices.

- The fans are spinning even when sleeping while the device is plugged in. Actually, I do not think it goes to sleep completely while plugged in. Disabling modern standby solved the problem, but the laptop could not wake up this time. I tried to disable away mode. It went to sleep this time; however, the fans were still spinning. It is extremely annoying that I cannot use the sleep mode while plugged in.

    The issue about the "battery":

- The battery jumps from %100 to %94 while I am using it on battery. Correlatively, when I use the laptop in a way that strains the CPU, the battery is draining from %100 to %94 despite the fact that it is plugged in. Then it charges again to %100, continuing in a cycle. I usually shut down the device at %100 battery, and it turns on at %94 from time to time. I know this issue is very common among the HP community, but I'd like to learn how serious it is.

It is the second day of the device. Should I return the product, or should I just ignore these weird incidents? Thank you in advance for your answers.

Hi @TugayK,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Your experience with the HP Victus R0001NT laptop highlights some concerning issues, particularly with the fans and battery. Let's break down these issues to better understand their potential impact and how serious they might be.

Fan Behavior

BIOS Menu Fan Speed

  • It's somewhat normal for laptop fans to behave differently in the BIOS menu compared to the operating system (OS) because the BIOS doesn't always have the same fan control algorithms as the OS. However, the fans spinning up to 3800-4000 RPM and your CPU reaching temperatures around 60 degrees Celsius in BIOS is unusual. Ideal CPU temperatures should generally be lower, especially in a BIOS setting where the system isn't under heavy load. It might indicate that the laptop is doing more in the background than it should, or there's an issue with the fan control in the BIOS.
  • The more aggressive fan behavior in your previous device and the current behavior could indeed suggest a recurring issue, possibly with the motherboard or the BIOS software itself. BIOS updates provided by the manufacturer can sometimes resolve these kinds of issues, so checking for an available update would be a wise first step.
  • please update the BIOS and windows.  https://support.hp.com/us-en

Fan Behavior in Sleep Mode

  • Fans spinning while the laptop is in sleep mode, especially when plugged in, isn't standard behavior. It indicates that the laptop might not be entering a proper low-power state. Disabling modern standby solved the problem at the cost of waking up issues, which suggests that there might be software or firmware problems related to power management. This again could be potentially resolved with a BIOS or driver update from HP, but it's concerning that such issues are present in a brand new device.

Battery Issue

  • The battery jumping from 100% to 94% is a behavior sometimes implemented by HP to preserve battery health by avoiding keeping the battery at 100% charge for extended periods. However, the way you describe it—occurring both on battery and when plugged in under load—suggests that there might be a problem with the battery's calibration or the power management system.
  • Battery calibration issues can sometimes be fixed by fully discharging and then recharging the battery, but considering this is a new device and you're experiencing this behavior, it's more indicative of a fault than a simple calibration issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
