@Sconnie1, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP Laptop 17-cp0xxx is stuck at 35% during a Windows update, here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:
Wait Patiently (if recently started)
Sometimes updates appear stuck but are still processing in the background. If it's been less than an hour, give it a bit more time.
Perform a Hard Reset
- Press and hold the Power button for about 10-15 seconds until the laptop shuts down.
- Disconnect any external devices (USB drives, printers, etc.).
- Turn the laptop back on and check if the update resumes or rolls back.
Boot into Safe Mode
If the update still doesn’t progress:
- Turn off the laptop.
- Turn it back on and immediately press the F11 key repeatedly until the Recovery menu appears.
- Select Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- Press 4 to boot into Safe Mode.
- Once in Safe Mode, restart the laptop normally.
Use HP Support Assistant or Update Drivers
Once you're back into Windows:
- Download and run the HP Support Assistant to check for any pending HP firmware or driver updates.
- You can also manually download drivers for your model from the official page:
HP Laptop 17-cp0xxx Drivers & Software
Run Windows Update Troubleshooter
- Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter and follow the on-screen instructions.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for the suggestions & I'll save them for next time. This particular update started in the evening & when I got up in the morning, it was still 35%. I ended up doing a system recovery & changing update settings to ask first rather than automatic.
