@Sconnie1, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP Laptop 17-cp0xxx is stuck at 35% during a Windows update, here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:

Wait Patiently (if recently started)

Sometimes updates appear stuck but are still processing in the background. If it's been less than an hour, give it a bit more time.

Perform a Hard Reset

  1. Press and hold the Power button for about 10-15 seconds until the laptop shuts down.
  2. Disconnect any external devices (USB drives, printers, etc.).
  3. Turn the laptop back on and check if the update resumes or rolls back.

Boot into Safe Mode

If the update still doesn’t progress:

  1. Turn off the laptop.
  2. Turn it back on and immediately press the F11 key repeatedly until the Recovery menu appears.
  3. Select Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  4. Press 4 to boot into Safe Mode.
  5. Once in Safe Mode, restart the laptop normally.

Use HP Support Assistant or Update Drivers

Once you're back into Windows:

Run Windows Update Troubleshooter

  1. Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  2. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter and follow the on-screen instructions.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for the suggestions & I'll save them for next time.  This particular update started in the evening & when I got up in the morning, it was still 35%.  I ended up doing a system recovery & changing update settings to ask first rather than automatic.
