HP Pavilion Notebook - 17-g153us
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I've been having computer issues for about a month now. My system randomly freezes to the point that i have to hard shut down at least once a day, the last  day or two my screen has randomly gone black for a short period, my HP Support Assist program also does not work even though I've uninstalled and re-installed more than once.

I've run Windows Updates and have found no issues. I've run Driver Booster 7 and have found no issues. I've run IObit Software Updater and have found no issues.

All of that being said, today I went to https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice and there are tons of things listed. How am I supposed to know if I need to update those or not? Why don't any of those things show up on Windows Update? I'm obviously NOT tech savvy and I'm trying to avoid needlessly buying a new device.

Windows updates are from Microsoft and many HP and other updates are from HP and/or from 3rd party vendors. They are right hands and left hands and in many cases "right hand doesn't know what the left is doing".

Now back to your machine. My suggestion: perform a clean install Windows 10 using the following installation media

         https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

The tool will allow you to make a bootable installation media (USB/DVD) and you can use installation media to install.

During the installation process if you are asked to enter a product key, check the 'Skip' box and W10 will install and then automatically activate once you are connected to the internet using the key embedded in BIOS of your machine.

You can also mount downloaded ISO file as DVD drive and run Setup from there.

Then you can install the drivers and available software you need from your PC's support page. Normally few Windows 10 updates can install nearly all drivers for you.

Note: If you wish to keep user files and applications/programs, you need to select this option from the beginning.

Regards.

Thank you for this response. Unfortunately, since I posted this question the laptop continued to freeze randomly until it entered a "automatic repair" screen and would not exist. As a result, a new laptop was given to me yesterday, which worked PERFECTLY until Windows Updater launched and installed about 10 updates. I spent a good portion of last night and about 2 hours today setting this BRAND NEW laptop to factory settings and re-installing my programs. Fingers crossed no more problems happen anytime soon.
