Hey guys,

Hope you are well. I have an HP Omen 17 that I would like to install an additional NVME into. I have two questions that your help would be greatly appreciated.

Firstly, it would be unplugged but can I do this without removing it from the battery?

Secondly, if battery has to be unplugged I am dreading the CMOS reset as in turn it would reset bios and I worry it might cause laptop to overheat as it would mess with intended HP settings (voltage, fan curves etc.) that it shipped with. would that be the case? or I shouldn't worry about that or is there something that I could do?

I tried to go into bios settings but I did not find an option to export or save settings, and while i did take photos of it, there were no fan settings for me to take pictures of. Unless something can be done with a particular HP application to restore bios as it shipped with.

Thank you for your help in advance,

Best,

Hi:

If there is no BIOS setting to adjust the fan speed, etc., I would have to assume that the default fan settings will be loaded when you reattach the battery.

Unfortunately, no one here can answer that question with any guarantee that everything will be exactly the same, because your notebook model series is so new that no one has reported doing any upgrades to it, nor any posts have shown up reporting that removing the battery caused issues with fan speed, overall performance, etc., in the 17-db1000 notebook model series.

You will have to hope that nothing changes from the excellent way that it is running now.

Sometimes even a BIOS update will cause issues that didn't exist before.

I've read reports on other models where BIOS updates have done things like that.

It's never happened to me though.

Hi:

You didn't mention what model Omen 17 you have but every service manual HP has will have a procedure to either remove or disconnect the wire from the battery to the motherboard.

So, if you don't want to do that, you will hope that you won't short out the motherboard by installing a secondary NVMe SSD with the battery connected to the motherboard.

I also hope that you know for a fact that your notebook does have support for two M.2 NVMe SSDs, because not all of them do.

If you provide the full model number or product number of your notebook, I will post the link to the service manual and service teardown video (if one is available).

If there are no fan settings in the BIOS, then those settings should not change if you remove or disconnect the battery.

Hello,

Sorry for the late reply and you are correct, here is the product name:  OMEN Gaming Laptop 17-db1000(RTX 5060, Ryzen AI 7 350).

I did actually open up the laptop before and I can confirm that it does have 2 NVME slots and I am also aware of how to remove the battery (by following this video 🛠️ How to open HP OMEN 17 (17-db0000) - disassembly and upgrade options )

I also am aware I drafted the question terribly lol, but you did catch it when you mentioned about fan setting.

My question was about if unplugging the battery thus clearing CMOS would clear (fan, CPU, RAM Etc.) settings that were shipped with the laptop itself, as I was reading about it on Google and some people were mentioning that their laptop (not Omen or HP for this matter) started behaving differently after they cleared CMOS, whether loud fans spinning all the time or generating more heat or performing worse. Just this is giving me anxiety lol since I don't want to change any setting with the laptop as it runs just PERFECT that deserves a chef's kiss lol.
