Hi

I had kept windows update disabled for 4-5 months since every time it happened, it stripped off some % performance.

I had some bad issues in startup and hence had to go for update, as suggested on many forums. The update was of some 4-5 GB and has totally spoilt the performance of my 1 yr old laptop.  I've also done every single update suggested by HP Assist - so no out of date drivers existing.

Now opening even firefox takes the CPU usage to more than 50%. Simple photo viewers alone eat 20% RAM. Net browsing, simple typing on windows gets stuck for no reason. Even the calculator app opens after 5-6 seconds wait. Some flow.exe also consumes heavy RAM (couldn't find it in startup or services). And it is not improving after doing CCleaner, Defragmentation, scandisk and stuff. All unwanted softwares, other than HP and Microsoft are uninstalled. No adware nothing. Startup list is cleaned up as well. I've disabled windows search, as suggested by some people. Nothing has worked as yet.

The config of my laptop is very good:

  • CPU Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7500U CPU @ 2.70GHz
  • RAM 12GB @2133 MHz
  • Intel(R) HD Graphics 620, 2GB, full HD display
  • Storage 1TB
  • Windows 10 Home 64-bit
  • Antivirus - Kaspersky total security

I'm thinking of resetting my Windows, but that would cost a lot of time and effort , in addition to losing many settings and even data. Any other way before I do that?

Any meaningful suggestion would be highly appreciated!

Thanks a lot.

Piyush.

I reviewed your post and understand that the computer is running very slow after the Windows update.

I'll be glad to help you 🙂

Awesome job on diagnosing the issue correctly and performing smart troubleshooting before posting your question on HP forums. Kudos to you on that score.

Thank you for providing detailed information about the issue you are facing.

I recommend you create a new user account on the computer and then check whether the issue persists in the new account.

Follow the steps in the below article to create a new user account on your computer.

If you continue to face the issue in the new account as well then I recommend you run a hardware test on the computer to make sure all the hardware components are working fine.

Follow the steps in the below article to run the system test.

If the hardware test fails then, I recommend you contact HP phone support to check the available service options for your computer.

Here is how you can get in touch with the phone support.

  1. Click on this link – https://hp.care/2moMFSc
  2. Click on “Continue as guest”.
  3. Enter the serial of your device.
  4. Select the country from the drop-down.
  5. Click on “Show Options”.
  6. Fill the web-form. A case number and phone number will now populate for you.

If the hardware test pass then I recommend you perform a reset on the computer to reinstall the Windows on your computer.

No other solution worked, so I am only left with an option to reset my laptop - already put in my question that I really don't want to do it 🙄.

Nevertheless, thanks for your reply.

p.s. I am also thinking of replacing the current HDD with an internal SSD. Would post the results if there is an improved performance.
