Latest drivers from AMD for 780M iGPU not works. It has black screen for integrated screen. Its not a big deal for Windows11 because Windows Update and HP supplied drivers works fine. But when you want to use Linux, it uses latest AMD drivers for current kernels so it has display errors with 780M. I don't want to use Discrete GPU from BIOS i know it works but it drains my battery. Do you have any solutions for using updated drivers from AMD?

Hi @erenalyoruk,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're encountering compatibility issues with the latest AMD drivers for the integrated GPU (iGPU) on your HP Victus 16 7840HS laptop, particularly when using Linux. Here are a few potential solutions you could try.

Kernel Parameters:

  • When booting into Linux, you can try adding specific kernel parameters that may help with compatibility. For example, you could try adding parameters related to graphics drivers, such as amdgpu.dc=0 or nomodeset. These parameters can sometimes help resolve issues with certain GPUs and drivers.

Custom Kernel:

  • Consider using a custom kernel built specifically for your hardware. There are distributions like Ubuntu's mainline kernel builds or custom kernel repositories that may include patches or configurations tailored for newer hardware like the AMD Radeon RX 780M. You may need to research and experiment with different kernels to find one that works well with your setup.

Driver Downgrade:

  • If the latest AMD drivers are causing issues, consider downgrading to an earlier version of the AMDGPU driver that is known to work well with your integrated GPU. You may need to experiment with different driver versions until you find one that provides both compatibility and stability.

Open Source Drivers:

  • Instead of using the proprietary AMDGPU drivers, you could try using the open-source Radeon drivers (usually provided by default in most Linux distributions). While these drivers may not offer the same level of performance as the proprietary drivers, they often have better compatibility and stability, especially with older or less common GPUs.

Contact AMD or Linux Distribution Support:

  • Reach out to AMD support or the support forums for your Linux distribution for assistance. They may be able to provide guidance or escalate the issue if it's a known bug or compatibility issue with the AMDGPU drivers.

Hybrid Graphics Management:

  • If your laptop has hybrid graphics (integrated and discrete GPUs), you could explore advanced configuration options for managing power consumption and graphics performance. Tools like vga_switcheroo or bumblebee may allow you to selectively switch between GPUs based on your needs.

Remember to backup your system before making significant changes, especially when experimenting with drivers or kernel parameters.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Using amdgpu.dc=0 and nomodeset even worse. Also tested with amdgpu.sg_display=0 and it fixed scattering in internal monitor. It has black screen sometimes but sometimes it also works. There is no fix i could find. This issue happens in latest AMD drivers in Windows11 so i think its based on AMD drivers not iGPU.
