how to upgrade my computer from Vista to win 8.1.

If your question is about an in-place Upgrade, where the apps, data, and settings are carried over from the old OS to the new OS -- then sorry, there is no such path from Vista to Win8.  MS only provides such paths from one OS version to the next, which in your case, would be from Vista to Win7.

 

You can, of course, insert a Win7 DVD into your optical drive and do a Clean-Install of Win7, but you would then have to purchase a license key for that, since your Vista OEM key will not work.
