I was performing a CHKDSK dor drive C and in the middle of it, it had the following messages

Deleting index entry volatile.dat.log in index $I30 of file 1468751

Deleting indez entryVOLATI~1.LOG in index %I30 of file 1468751

Then at the end it said fixing files. What do those messages suggest was wrong?

Thank you. The tests for my hard drive and memory passed.

The test for my battery failed, and since my computer is older I'm having a hard time finding the right part and HP no longer sells it. Can it harm the computer if I keep the batter in my computer? It has a eleven percent charge capacity.

You are welcome.

No, no problem to keep the old battery in the computer. Don't worry about it. You will just have to use the AC more often.

With regards to the HDD - if the tests from BIOS passed and if you no longer see issues with CheckDisk (message appeared one and fixed the issues), you have nothig to worry about. Please, mark the reply/threat as solved if you have no further issues.

Feel free to post again if you have further questions or if you experience issues.

Hello @jacquelynm

Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting.

CheckDisk description - from Microsoft - Win XP days - what does Check Disk (checkdsk) app do:

  • "Creates and displays a status report for a disk based on the file system. Chkdsk also lists and corrects errors on the disk. Used without parameters, chkdsk displays the status of the disk in the current drive."

  • From Wikipedia: "Displays the file system integrity status of hard disks and floppy disk and can fix logical file system errors."

What is a file system > https://www.howtogeek.com/196051/htg-explains-what-is-a-file-system-and-why-are-there-so-many-of-the...

If it was just the Index entry , a file or files were already damaged, before chkdsk deleted the index. Thats why it says the index points to an unused file (probably a bad block that could not be read, so it could not be reallocated).

It may happen due to many reasons including bad/old file system such as FAT32 and power failure before, for example.

If you can boot to Windows desktop, I strongly recommend that you create a back up of your most important files.

Also, please check the HDD based on HP's BIOS capabilities:

1. Please, shutdown the computer using the power button

2. Power it on.

2.1 As soon as you press the power-on button, immediately begin hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap).

This should open a HP Startup Menu which may look similar to this one

3. Choose F2 to open System Diagnostics  (or press the appropriate F option to run diagnostics).

Follow the on-screen instructions to perform components test of the HDD.

If there are no system checks/no quick tests, perform HDD and RAM check *or run-in / fast tests).

Let me know the test results.
