Hi @Basic1107,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

The message “CMOS checksum is invalid” at startup means your laptop’s BIOS detected that the stored configuration data in the CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor) memory doesn’t match the expected checksum value. In simple terms, the BIOS checks its settings for integrity, and if the calculated checksum doesn’t match, it assumes the data is corrupted or reset.

Common Causes

  1. CMOS Battery Issue
    • The small battery that powers the CMOS when the laptop is off may be weak or failing.
    • On many modern laptops, this battery is integrated with the main battery.
  2. BIOS Settings Reset or Corruption
    • A recent BIOS update, power surge, or improper shutdown can cause this.
  3. Hardware Changes
    • Adding/removing RAM or storage can sometimes trigger this error.

How to Fix It

  1. Reset BIOS to Defaults
    • On startup, press Esc or F10 to enter BIOS.
    • Choose Restore Defaults, then save and exit.

  2. Update BIOS
  3. Check Battery
    • If the error persists, the CMOS battery may need replacement (on some HP laptops, this means replacing the main battery).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
