Hi @Pettes,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thank you for your question. CMOS stands for Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor. In HP laptops, the term "CMOS" is commonly used to refer to a small memory chip that stores important system settings used by the BIOS/UEFI firmware.
What does the CMOS do?
The CMOS stores settings such as:
- System date and time
- Boot order (which device the laptop tries to start from first)
- BIOS/UEFI configuration settings
- Hardware configuration information
These settings are retained even when the laptop is powered off by using a small CMOS/RTC battery on the system board.
What happens if the CMOS settings become corrupted?
You may experience issues such as:
- Incorrect date and time
- BIOS settings resetting unexpectedly
- Startup or boot problems
- Hardware is not being detected correctly
- BIOS-related error messages
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!
I'm an HP Employee.
