The laptop was bought in May or June at Amazon but we just gave it to our son for his birthday last week. When does the warrranty start?

We have no registered the laptop yet

Usually the warranty starts from date of purchase. Reason being the warranty is based on date it was built which is stored in BIOS. But a laptop can sit on a shelf or in a warehouse for 6 months and the purchaser would be able to get warranty start date adjusted at HP by proof of purchase date.

Thanks

How do I do this? I want to register it soon and get the full year

Registering it really has nothing to do with it. (It should have been done automatically during setup anyway). The warranty can be validated by Serial number and disputed to adjust to purchase date.- using the info in the document below.

Ok thanks. It shows the warranty started when it was puchased in May. How can I contact HP to get it changed to when we gave it as a gift?

Afaik, HP will only adjust warranty based on purchase date. On the warranty check page if you use the Dispute link- it askes for proof of purchase to adjust it. This is to offset any machine that may have been in a warehouse or on a shelf for x amount of time being being purchased. The only two ways HP warranty is set is by born on date in BIOS or proof of purchase if the laptop was purchased months after manufactured date.

Two new laptop's, three requests to update the warranty from date of purchase and have not gotten any information that the warranty has been updated.

sending them back to seller due to lack of warranty and lack of support.
