Hi @Golfer2024,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're experiencing a common issue where a computer restarts instead of shutting down. This can be due to a variety of reasons, including software settings, hardware issues, or system corruption. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue with your HP ENVY x360 - 15-ds0037au:
Power Settings Adjustment:
- Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
- Click on Choose what the power buttons do.
- Click on Change settings that are currently unavailable.
- Uncheck the box next to Turn on fast startup (recommended). This feature, while saving time during startup, can sometimes cause issues with shutting down.
- Click Save changes and attempt to shut down your computer again.
Update Drivers and Windows:
- Make sure all your drivers, especially the chipset and graphics drivers, are up to date. You can do this through the Device Manager or by visiting the HP support website for your specific model.
- Additionally, ensure your Windows is up to date by going to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, and click Check for updates.
Disable Automatic Restart:
- Sometimes, Windows is set to automatically restart upon system failure, which might be misinterpreted during the shutdown process.
- Right-click on This PC and select Properties.
- Click on Advanced system settings > Advanced tab > Startup and Recovery > Settings.
- Under System failure, uncheck Automatically restart.
- Click OK and try shutting down your computer again.
Check for Software Conflicts:
- Software running in the background can sometimes prevent your computer from shutting down properly. Try performing a clean boot (disabling all non-Microsoft services and startup applications from the System Configuration) to see if the issue persists. If the issue is resolved, you can enable services and applications one by one to identify the culprit.
Check for BIOS/UEFI Firmware Update:
- Occasionally, a BIOS/UEFI firmware update can resolve compatibility and hardware-related issues. Visit the HP support website, look for firmware updates for your specific model, and follow the instructions carefully to update.
Hardware Issues:
- If none of the above solutions work, there might be an underlying hardware issue, such as a faulty power supply or motherboard.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
