This seem kind of dumb, why have options in bios for UEFI and you can't change it. Can boot to USB. If the hard drive goods bad can't get a OS on replacement drive. Is the a way to go legacy in the bios, I could not find.

Hi @waybiz,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you're unable to boot from a USB drive and suspect that you need to switch from UEFI to Legacy mode (or vice versa) in the BIOS, it's important to understand that the exact steps can vary depending on the manufacturer of your motherboard or laptop. Here’s a detailed guide on how to switch between UEFI and Legacy BIOS modes, and what to do if the option seems unavailable:
1. Accessing the BIOS/UEFI Settings
Restart Your Computer:
- Start by restarting your computer.
Enter BIOS/UEFI Setup:
- During the boot process, press the designated key to enter the BIOS/UEFI setup. Common keys are F2, F10, Delete, or Esc. The specific key often appears briefly on the screen during startup.
2. Locate the Boot Options
Navigate to Boot Menu:
- Once in the BIOS/UEFI, use the arrow keys to navigate. Look for a tab or menu related to boot options, boot settings, or boot configuration.
Find Boot Mode Settings:
- Look for options such as Boot Mode, Boot Priority, UEFI/Legacy Boot, CSM (Compatibility Support Module), or similar terms.
3. Change Boot Mode
Switch Boot Mode:
- If you see an option for Boot Mode or Boot Priority, you should be able to switch between UEFI and Legacy (or sometimes called CSM).
- Change this setting according to your needs:
- UEFI: Modern systems use this mode. It supports Secure Boot and is generally required for newer OS installations.
- Legacy: This mode is for older systems and may be required for certain older operating systems or boot media.
Save and Exit:
- After making changes, save the settings. There should be a prompt or option to Save and Exit or Save Changes.
4. If the Option is Not Visible
Check for Firmware Updates:
- Ensure your BIOS/UEFI firmware is up to date. Sometimes newer firmware versions add or modify options related to boot settings. Visit the manufacturer's website for the latest firmware updates.
Look for Advanced Settings:
- Some BIOS/UEFI interfaces hide advanced options under an “Advanced” or “Additional Settings” tab. Explore these sections if the Boot Mode setting is not immediately visible.
Reset BIOS/UEFI to Default Settings:
- As a last resort, you can reset your BIOS/UEFI to default settings. This can sometimes restore missing options. Look for an option such as Load Default Settings or Reset to Default in the BIOS/UEFI menu.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
