Envy 13 (2019)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

It's my only way to access things like that at the moment, as a BSD has started filling the screen almost as soon as Windows has loaded.  Details.of the problem itself are probably off-topic unless asked for, and I've found probable solutions online.  But they're complicated by being new to the Envy (and HP computers in general).   And also to Windows 10, my only previous Windows being Vista, and 98SE before that.  (Unless you count one I installed and quickly uninstalled in the 1980s!).

Though I've been using this notebook a bit, I haven't finished configuring it, and don't yet know what all the keys do, and haven't studied the manual (was going to finish setting up printing first, and haven't found a way of accessing the documentation from another device).

I am familiar with using function keys though, including pressing one repeatedly during startup to access BIOS etc, which still seems to be going strong and figures in the solutions.  Although those I found are all re Windows 10, they're with other makes of computer, and I feel the less trial-and-error the better with these rather existential Windows issues.  All I need at the moment is which function key to use (rather than a range of keys that it 'may be'!).

If I sometimes seem slow to respond it'll just be the time zones (I'm in Ireland).

Hi:

Turn on the PC and immediately press the ESC key to get the menu of options.

There should be a F11 recovery option listed.

Thank you, that was perfect!

I can now access recovery options etc, tried Safe Mode and that worked, so it seems unlikely to be a hardware fault.  (How best to go on from here in this case is another topic!).
