HP Pavilion 15-p078na Notebook PC
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Good day. I am wondering which version of the BIOS I am supposed to download?

On the link

https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-pavilion-15-p000-notebook-pc-series/6936226/mode...

there are two listed: "F.07 Rev.A"(released 2014) and "F.57 Rev.A"(released 2018)

Which one do I get?

A little history about this issue:

I was finishing up using Notepad last Wednesday night. After saving the file, I tried to close the program and was greeted with "notepad not responding" error message for some minutes. Odd. I then tried to watch an offline video with VLC player but the video did not start, and I got another "VLC player not responding" error message. None of these files were new and I was not connected to the internet.

At that point I decided to run Malwarebytes. It found nothing. I tried to open the task manager but it took forever as the computer had become sluggish. I even got a "windows explorer not responding" error message. Tired, I shut down the notebook intending to figure out what was going on the following morning.

The next day I booted the computer up (it do so normally). I chose not to sign-in because I saw the "update and restart" option (windows update) and decided to do that first. Mistake.

The computer did not boot up giving the "blue screen of death" error code "unmountable boot volume" and initiating automatic repair. After leaving the notebook alone for 4-6 hours (auto-repair though painfully slow was able to progress to the "diagnosis stage(?)") I came back to a blank screen (no power) and the caps lock button blinking twice.

After some searching and following the instructions on the hp website, I have been directed that my next option was to boot the computer using BIOS loaded onto a USB drive. So here we are and hence my question.

One final query. I have been very unlucky with this device. I first used this computer (brand new) in early January 2016. In the past 4 years:

-the partition(?) got corrupted and had to be rebuilt

-the keyboard went and had to be replaced

-the battery went and can no longer hold a charge for more that 1 minute

-the monitor went twice (replaced it completely the first time, but I am reluctant to spend any more on repairs given my luck)

-and now this issue.

I am curious, is this normal or do I just have terrible luck? I mostly use the computer to read, write/work, browse the internet and watch youtube so it really is not getting stressed.

Windows 8/8.1 uses same key. If you wish to know what it is (including the key) please use the following tool

Thanks for responding. However, I do not think that your suggestion works for my problem.

There is no BIOS version for windows 8 on the hp website. Only the two versions listed above ("F.07 Rev.A"(released 2014) and "F.57 Rev.A"(released 2018)). Both are labelled for windows 8.1.

That they are both labelled for windows 8.1 is fine. I know that the operating system running on the device is windows 8.1 (64 bit).

My question was about F.07 Rev.A. versus F.57 Rev.A. These two have different file sizes, and are I guess different files. (One is 15MB and the other is 26MB.) I would like to know which one I am supposed to use, especially since there is a warning that using the wrong one will create further  problems.

Sorry but I am not that tech savvy at all, so I am not certain that the "keyfinder" link that you provided would be applicable. (I did read the information on that page.) Remember that the computer with the problem can not even start, so I would not be able to use the keyfinder program even if I understood what it was to be used for.

I hope this additional information will be helpful in pointing out whether I should get:

-F.07 Rev.A (15MB)

or

-F.57 Rev.A (26MB)

Thanks again for your help.

If my question was unclear, please let me know so that I can rephrase it.

Question:

I have been directed to reboot the BIOS from a USB drive. There are two files for windows 8.1 (64-bit) available from the HP Support website.

-F.07 Rev.A (15MB) released 2014

and

-F.57 Rev.A (26MB) released 2018

Which one do I get/use? If any additional information is required, I will gladly provide it.
