Why won't my hp laptop charge while it's on? I can plug it in to keep it from shutting down once the battery runs down but it will only charge if I shut it down. This is very limiting. Help someone!

Hi @charitys3,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like there might be a few potential reasons why your HP laptop is only charging when it's shut down.

  • Faulty Power Adapter or Cable: Sometimes, the issue lies with the power adapter or the charging cable itself. Try using a different power adapter or cable to see if the problem persists.
  • Battery Health: If the battery is old or damaged, it may not charge properly when the laptop is on. You can check the battery health through your laptop's settings or using diagnostic tools provided by HP.
  • Software or Driver Issue: Occasionally, software or driver issues can interfere with the charging process. Make sure your laptop's operating system and drivers are up to date. You can also try reinstalling the battery drivers to see if that resolves the issue.
  • BIOS Settings: Sometimes, BIOS settings can affect how the laptop charges. Check your BIOS settings to ensure there are no power management options that could be causing the issue.
  • Hardware Problem: If none of the above solutions work, there may be a hardware problem with your laptop's charging port or circuitry.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
