Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

The last time I downloaded updates to this computer it restarted but instead of giving me that screen that says installing updates do not turn off the power, I get the HP logo. This computer will not boot up into the operating system.

I also tried reinstalling Windows but that would not work. It didn't matter what operating system I put in the disk tray it just brought me to the HP logo

At first I thought maybe it was a hard drive issue so I replaced the hard drive with a brand new one and tried to install Linux. Unfortunately it just went right back to the HP logo and wouldn't even load the disk

Since it was not the hard drive I tried replacing the optical disc drive
However that did not make any difference. It's still brought me back to the HP logo.

The next thing I tried to do was taking out the BIOS battery. I left the computer unplugged and the Bios battery out overnight that way I could be sure there was no power left in the motherboard. I also held down the power button for like 5 minutes before putting the BIOS battery back in. I plugged up the computer turned it on and that did not solve the issue. The only thing that changed was I had to re-enter the date and time. But still I'm stuck at the HP logo.

It could not be the motherboard because the computer still turns on and It's probably not a ram issue because this not a faulty ram symptom.

So this brings me to only one conclusion.

Is it possible that last ba updates I downloaded accidentally overclocked the CPU and caused it to fry?
Will a damaged CPU prevent the computer from booting into the operating system?

From your description, it sounds like the Boot Order you have set in the BIOS has the hard disk as first and perhaps, does not even have the CD/DVD drive in the list.

If you disconnect all the drives and leave a bootable disc in the tray, turn on the PC, close the tray, then you should get some kind of message on the screen either telling you it is booting from the CD/DVD or telling you to press a key to make that happen.

If neither of these is happening, then you need to go into your BIOS settings and ensure that the CD/VD drive is in your list of boot devices and is the FIRST in the list.

Since you mentioned that I installed l a hard drive that already had Linux Mint installed.

Unfortunately it still wouldn't go past the HP logo

As I said, check the BIOS settings.

  • Okay I'm in my BIOS settings and I have the CD / DVD drive set as the default boot option and it is definitely number one on the boot order list. Unfortunately it will not boot into the DVD / CD it will just go to the HP logo and stay there. I will also point out that it doesn't matter what CD / DVD drive I install in the computer the CD / DVD drive under the option menu is for some reason grayed out then you can't select it you have to select a network boot in order to even get the message that says press any button to boot from DVD.  Unfortunately after you click any button it just goes to the HP screen and just stays there.

What should I try now?
