Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am in the preliminary process of resetting this notebook and hopefully finishing with a device which us pure Win 10,not a hybrid with Win 8.5

This is the Disk Management layout and I would be grateful for some guidance on how (or whether) to clean up any surplus partitions before starting earnest work on resetting.

I'm sorry to have failed to properly describe the OS situation.

Correctly, the device was upgraded from Win 7 and I can often be presented with references to  Win7 e.g. if I type 'Backup' in the Search box, the window which appears is entitled 'Back up and Restore (Windows 7)' !!

My clumsy attempt to describe this situation was intended to convey the weird mix.

I had already downloaded the Win 10 Installation Media onto a USB stick and thank you for supplying the link for its use.

When the dust settles, is there a chance that I shall have an OS which is closer to an original Win 10 or would you recommend a quick trip to the local recycling centre (just kidding).

Thank you for a very useful reply.

First off, you mention the PC having two OSs on it: Win10 and Win8.5.  As there is no Win8.5, I don't know what you mean by the latter.

Second, if it really does have two OSs on in, no internal Reset is going to work, as HP does not provide PCs preinstalled with such a configuration, and changing it to do that results in corruption to the HP Recovery information.

Third, the presence of extra partitions (apart from F: -- which I can not see on the screenshot) is typical of UEFI machines and is nothing to be concerned with.  Unlike old DOS PCs, UEFI PCs can contain many partitions, so there is no feasible limit to worry about.

Fourth, if you just want to do a Refresh on the PC, then do the following:

What MIGHT work is something known as a repair-install.  This is the least destructive of all the Windows recovery functions and rewrites the Windows system files, including the drivers, leaving your data, settings, and applications intact.

To do this, you will need to use the link to download Win10 installation media and either burn a DVD or create a USB stick: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/media-creation-tool-install?ocid=ms_wol_win10

Note that when you go do download and build install media, the tool defaults to matching what is already installed on your PC (as in, Home for Home, 64-bit for 64-bit).  Make sure you select the same version as needed for your PC. If you do not, the resulting media will be different and will force you to enter a NEW product code!

Once you have that media, follow the instructions in the link:  http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/16397-repair-install-windows-10-place-upgrade.html
