Went to MS site where they confirmed this laptop was capable of handling Win 10 so I upgraded, and now I get blue screens within a minute of windows desktop launch. I tried rolling back via windows option, and then tried the HP recovery which both failed. Can I use the base windows 8.1 install from their site to reinstall, and how do I roll back the OS registration (with MS or HP)?

Sadly it turns out that the 15-1049wm comes with a proprietary version "Windows 8 with Bing", which means it can't use the stock version of windows image. HP offers a usb drive for purchase to do an actual restore, which wouldn't be as galling if the post I found that on didn't recommend windows 10 as an alternative for a similar case.

Yes, you should be able to use the Media Creation Tool & Windows 8.1 from Micosoft site to make a bootable flash drive to install. Not sure what you mean by roll back OS registration. When you do the install it will go through the process.
