Hi @Hellen2680,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your laptop is freezing as soon as it starts up, it could be due to a variety of issues ranging from software problems to hardware failures. Here’s a systematic approach to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue:

**1. Perform a Hard Restart

  • Force Shutdown:
    • Press and hold the power button for about 10-15 seconds until the laptop shuts off completely.
    • Wait a few seconds and then press the power button again to restart the laptop.

**2. Boot in Safe Mode

  • Access Safe Mode:
    • Restart your laptop and repeatedly press F8 (or Shift + F8 on newer systems) during startup to access the Advanced Boot Options menu.
    • Select Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking from the menu. Safe Mode loads only essential drivers and can help determine if the issue is caused by third-party software or drivers.

**3. Check for Hardware Issues

  • Inspect Hardware Connections:
    • Ensure that all internal and external hardware components (RAM, hard drive, etc.) are properly connected. For laptops, this may involve checking the RAM and hard drive connections, which can sometimes be done by removing and reseating these components.
  • Disconnect External Devices:
    • Disconnect all peripheral devices (USB drives, external hard drives, printers) and restart the laptop. Sometimes external devices can cause freezing issues.

**4. Run Diagnostic Tools

  • Built-In Diagnostics:
    • Many laptops come with built-in diagnostic tools that you can access during startup. Check your laptop’s manual for instructions on how to run these diagnostics.
  • Manufacturer Diagnostics:
    • Some manufacturers offer diagnostic tools or utilities that can be downloaded and run from a bootable USB drive. Check your laptop manufacturer’s website for available diagnostic tools.

**5. Check for Overheating:

  • Make sure the laptop's vents are not blocked and that the fan is running. Overheating can cause the laptop to freeze:
  • If the laptop is overheating, clean the vents and fan to ensure proper airflow. You can use compressed air to blow dust out of the vents.

**6. Perform a System File Check

  • Access Command Prompt:
    • Boot into Safe Mode or use a recovery drive to access the Command Prompt.
    • Type sfc /scannow and press Enter. This command will check and repair corrupted system files.

**7. Check for Recent Changes

  • Uninstall Recent Updates or Software:
    • If the issue started after installing new software or updates, try uninstalling them. In Safe Mode, go to Control Panel > Programs and Features and remove recently installed programs.
    • Also, check Windows Update for any recent updates that might be causing the issue.

**8. Update or Roll Back Driver

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.
