HP Stream 14-z000 Notebook PC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

> Bought the laptop with windows 10 on it (brand new)

> Used it for while but kept running out of space.

> Deleted everything I could but still no good.

> Suspecting hidden files or something, decided to reset entire laptop.

> Reloaded it using the "reset" feature (built in).

> Have no other files/programs saved now (brand new reload)

> It keeps saying that it needs to update but doesn't have enough space (needs 8gb)

> There doesn't seem to be a way to turn off the updates.

> What is the point of this laptop if the built in memory cannot store windows 10 on its own?

> Am I missing something? Is there a solution?

Thanks for reaching out to us on HP Support Forums. I came across your post and would like to help.

I understand that you have a new HP Stream 14-z000 series laptop. I read that the laptop is unable to download an update and it says there is insufficient space. You've done a remarkable job performing the steps. I appreciate the steps you have performed and have certainly done a good job.

May I know what update it is and please let me know the exact laptop model no. This link will help you to find the model no: http://hp.care/2bygf7l. The  HP Stream 14-z000 series has many sub model laptops under its umbrella

I did some research and found that these laptop models come with a 32 GB memory storage space. The Windows 10 64 bit operating system will occupy at least 20GB space. Over an above that there could be other programs that came preinstalled on your laptop. Even those programs will occupy some space.

However, you may attempt the steps from this HP document to free up some space.

Hope this information helps. Keep me posted. Cheers! 🙂

Thanks very much for your prompt reply. I followed your advice and the steps at the link you provided and it seems to have done the trick. It also came up with a box somewhere along the way asking if I'd like to delete my old copy of windows (which I did. It hadn't asked before). Only mentioning that in case someone's reading this who has the same problem. Anyway, the main thing is it's all installed and updated now and I'm left with 3.6 GB which is more than enough for my needs.

Many thanks, Rob.

I have a HP x2 10-p050na, about 6 months old.

I have gone through all the steps suggested to free up disk space, and only have 6.20GB free. Windows wants 8GB to perform the latest update. I have a 16GB flash drive available but windows ignores this. I have a 15GB SD card inserted, but the connection to this is unreliable. Sometimes the computer sees it, and sometimes not.  I also have a 1TB external hard drive available, buth again Windows ignores this. I understand it is not possible to upgrade the built in memory on this model.

The total capacity on the C drive is shown in properties as 27.8 GB. of which 21.6 GB is used and 6.2 free. Going through the folders on the C: drive, I find that the Windows folder uses 21.3 GB, Program files uses 1.53 GB and all of these came with the computer, Program files (x86) uses 0.26 GB, and Users uses 0.43 GB. The other folders are either empty or use 1MB or less.

It is absurd that a computer sold to use Windows 10 cannot update because of lack of sorage space. Windows keeps trying to install the upgrade automatically, and failing.

What can I do?

Turned it on this morning and found there was 8.02GB available, so started update. Fingers crossed. I guess I needed to restart more times to clear everything out.

HP & Microsoft need to discuss cut down versions of updates for computers such as this with very small storage capacities.
