Sister's laptop Mod 2000-2b44DX was originally Win 8, upgraded to 10 by download. HDD has failed -- won't even respond with new PCB -- and she cannot find any original media; of course, she also has no external backups.
Is it HP practice to offer replacement media, free or discounted, with just the model and serial number, or is this now a candidate for Linux OS once I replace the drive? There appears to be no email address or other direct contact info on this site to ask them directly.

Hi:
if the PC was previously upgraded to W10, you can reinstall W10 for free by creating bootable installation media using the media creation tool at the link below.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
If you are asked to enter a product key during the installation process, select the 'I don't have a product key' option, and W10 will install and automatically activate once the PC is reconnected to the internet.
