Hi folks,

I am using hp pavillion dv6 6119tx notebook since 2012. It was shipped with win7 later on in late 2020 i upgraded to win 10. Since then it was working fine for almost 2 years.

Lateron once I updated win10, the driver for hd3000 suddenly stops working. I have descrete gpu in my notebook i.e. amd radeon hd6490m. But the graphics is not shifting to the amd gpu either.

Since then i am using linux mint, and both gpu works fine in it, but my question is ,

Is it not possible to run hp dv6 6119tx with hd3000 + radeon6490m entirely on radeon hd 6490m with windows?

Please reply

Hi @pruthvi0911,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for the detailed background. You're right to ask whether it's possible to run your HP Pavilion dv6-6119tx entirely on the AMD Radeon HD 6490M GPU under Windows. Here's a breakdown of the situation and your options:

Understanding Your Laptop's GPU Setup

Your laptop uses switchable graphics:

  • Intel HD Graphics 3000 (integrated GPU)
  • AMD Radeon HD 6490M (discrete GPU)

In Windows, these GPUs are managed by switchable graphics technology, which dynamically switches between them based on workload. However, this setup relies heavily on driver support, and unfortunately:

Intel HD 3000 is not officially supported on Windows 10 or 11, and AMD’s legacy switchable graphics drivers are no longer maintained for this configuration.

Why You Can't Use Only the AMD GPU in Windows

  • The Intel GPU is required to initialize the display and manage basic rendering.
  • The AMD GPU acts as a co-processor, offloading tasks when needed.
  • Without a working Intel driver, Windows cannot properly initialize the switchable graphics system, and the AMD GPU remains inactive.

Why It Works in Linux Mint

Linux uses open-source drivers (like radeon or amdgpu) and kernel-level GPU switching (via vga_switcheroo or DRI PRIME), which allows you to bypass Intel and use AMD directly.

If you still want to try using Windows with AMD only:

1. Try Legacy Driver Installation

  • Use Windows 7 compatibility mode to install older Intel HD 3000 and AMD Catalyst drivers.
  • You can find these on AMD’s legacy driver archive.

2. Disable Intel GPU in BIOS (if available)

  • Some BIOS versions allow disabling the integrated GPU, but most HP laptops do not offer this option.

3. Use Windows 7 or Linux for Full GPU Access

  • Windows 7 supports both GPUs, but there are no more drivers available from HP.
  • Linux Mint gives you full control and better performance with open drivers.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
