Hey, recently my OS became so corrupted that I had no option but to install a fresh Windows 11 image from Microsoft. After this, both my integrated GPU from the R7 6800H and dedicated RX 6650M GPU are not being detected properly as display drivers, instead there are 2 Microsoft Basic Display Adapters. If I uninstall both or try to install drivers from AMD Adrenalin, my PC crashes and goes into a boot loop. Also, HP Omen doesn't detect my GPU or SmartShift. Is there anyway to resolve this issue?

Hi @captainalx

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I’m sorry you’re going through this; I understand the concern and don’t worry I’ll help you with this.

To help troubleshoot further, could you provide a few more details:

  • Which exact HP Omen model do you have?
  • Did you use HP Recovery Media originally, or did you install a clean Windows 11 image directly from Microsoft?
  • Are you currently able to boot into Safe Mode, or is the system crashing immediately when installing drivers?
  • Have you tried checking the BIOS/UEFI to see if both GPUs are enabled?

In the meantime, here are some troubleshooting steps that often help with GPU detection issues on HP Omen laptops:

  1. Check BIOS/UEFI settings – Ensure the integrated and dedicated GPUs are enabled, and that any hybrid or SmartShift options are configured correctly.
  2. Use HP Support Assistant – Sometimes HP-specific drivers (for SmartShift, GPU switching, and system stability) must be installed before AMD drivers.
  3. Install chipset drivers first – Download and install the latest HP chipset drivers for your model before attempting GPU driver installation.
  4. Safe Mode clean install – Boot into Safe Mode to remove any existing GPU drivers, then install specific GPU drivers first.
  5. Windows Updates – Make sure all pending updates, especially for system hardware, are installed, as some AMD drivers require specific Windows patches.
  6. BIOS update – Check if your HP Omen has a newer BIOS version with the help of this link https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers  , which can resolve GPU detection and SmartShift issues.

Once I have your answers to the questions above, I can guide you step-by-step to get both GPUs recognized properly without crashing.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply!

  • Which exact HP Omen model do you have?OMEN Gaming Laptop 16-n0033dx (6G0K5UA)
  • Did you use HP Recovery Media originally, or did you install a clean Windows 11 image directly from Microsoft?I used a clean Windows 11 install from Microsoft, but I also tried the HP Cloud Recovery tool afterwards and installing the recovery media from that method failed.
  • Are you currently able to boot into Safe Mode, or is the system crashing immediately when installing drivers?Currently, I can boot into safe mode as well as regular windows, but only the AMD integrated graphics are enabled because the system crashes and goes into a boot loop if I enable the RX6650M (both drivers are up to date, though). In the AMD Adrenalin and Omen Gaming Hub software, only my iGPU is shown and there is no mention of SmartAccess/SmartShift/etc.
  • Have you tried checking the BIOS/UEFI to see if both GPUs are enabled? My BIOS/UEFI has no option to toggle GPUs or any graphics settings, and it is also up to date.

Hi @captainalx

Thank you for your response.

It sounds like your clean Windows 11 install is missing the HP-specific firmware and system drivers that the OMEN 16 needs for the AMD iGPU + RX 6650M hybrid graphics setup. When those aren’t installed, Windows falls back to “Microsoft Basic Display Adapter,” and trying to load Adrenalin causes crashes because the hardware isn’t being initialized correctly, you need the HP platform drivers first.

Try this in order (very important):

1. Safe mode and AMD Drivers uninstall

  • Boot into Safe Mode
  • remove all AMD GPU drivers (both display + system)
  • Reboot normally (you’ll see Microsoft Basic Display Adapter again — that’s expected)

2. Install HP-specific system/firmware drivers first  : https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers

From the HP support page for your exact model:

  1. AMD Chipset Driver (HP version)
  2. HP System Event Utility + HP Hotkey Support
  3. OMEN Gaming Hub SDK / HP Thermal & Power Framework drivers
  4. HP provided AMD Graphics Driver (install this before AMD Adrenalin)

These drivers configure ACPI devices that control:

  • Hybrid GPU switching
  • SmartShift
  • Power rails for the RX 6650M
  • PCIe initialization for the dGPU

Without them, Adrenalin crashes the system.

3. Only then install AMD Adrenalin (optional)

Once the HP driver is working and the RX 6650M appears correctly, you can update using Adrenalin.

If the system still crashes when enabling the RX 6650M

You can also , try running HP Cloud Recovery again with:

  • A different USB stick ( 32GB)
  • A wired connection if possible
  • All security software disabled

I hope this helps.

I tried installing and running the listed "AMD High-Definition Graphics Driver" from the HP driver page, but when I do so, the folder contains a FAILURE.flg file and running HPUP.exe doesn't do anything. Should I try installing an older version of the graphics drivers instead?
