Hi there, I've been "dealing" with this problem for a long time.
Every time my laptop updates to the 23H2 version, after finishing the update (installation process) the login screen pops up and theres no face recognition, I enter my PIN and it looks like its starting up, but the screen goes blank. I have a mouse cursor, I can ctrl+alt+del, but theres nothing on the screen.
I have to go through the uninstall process by entering to the HP troubleshoot boot to uninstall the 23H2 and go back to 21H2 where my system works perfectly. I know this is an old laptop, but still does the trick for what I need it. All drivers are up to date, specially video that I read somewhere it use to be a problem to update to 23H2.
My current spec:
HP x360 convertible 13-ae0xx
Windows 11 Home update 21H2
22000.2538 OS build
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8550U CPU @ 1.80GHz 1.99 GHz
16.0 GB RAM
64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620 Card, Video drivers:
Driver date 3/3/2023
Version 31.0.101.2121
BIOS version/Date AMI F.36, 3/19/2022
BIOS mode UEFI
I'd really like to get this laptop up to date or if this is just not posible due to compatibility isues or something like that, how could I make windows stop updating to 23H2 ?
Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi:
See if updating the graphics driver to the latest version from the Intel website and then trying to update to W11 23H2 works.
You will probably have to manually install the driver if the auto install doesn't work.
This is the link to the latest driver for your notebook's graphics adapter model:
Intel® 7th-10th Gen Processor Graphics - Windows*
If the auto install doesn't work, here is how to manually update the driver to the latest version:
First, create a system restore point so that you can roll back to the current graphics driver you have installed, just in case the updated driver does not work to your expectations.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4027538/windows-create-a-system-restore-point
Next, download and install this free file utility. The first link at the top of the page is for 64 bit.
After you install 7-Zip, right click on the Intel graphics driver exe file you saved before you ran it.
Select 7-Zip from the list of items on the menu after you select 'more options.'
Have 7-Zip Extract to: and let it extract the exe file into its driver folder.
Then go to the device manager, click to expand the Display Adapters device manager category.
Click on the Intel HD graphics adapter listed there.
Click on the driver tab. Click on Update Driver.
Select the 'Browse my computer for drivers' option, and then at the bottom of that window, select the Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.
Click on Have Disk and browse to the unzipped graphics driver folder>Graphics>iigd_dch (setup information file), click Next, and the driver should install.
Be patient, as it can take a few minutes for the driver to completely install.
When the installation is finished, restart the PC.
To update the Intel HDMI audio driver to the latest version, go to the device manager, click to expand the Sound, video and game controllers device manager category.
Click on the Intel HD audio device listed there. Click on the driver tab. Click on Update driver.
Select the Browse my computer for driver software option and browse to the unzipped Intel graphics driver main folder.
Make sure that the Include subfolders box is checked, and the driver will install.

Hello, and thank you for the quick response.
I've downloaded and installed the drivers you point me to. Everything went smoothly (awkward cause I tried to install drivers before and a message would pop up saying I should only install HP web listed drivers) anyway, drivers are installed and seem to work ok.
I'm gonna try update to 23H2 and see what happens and post back.

I just finished trying to update to 23H2, and again, no luck.
Laptop starts perfectly, when it comes to login screen, face recognition doesn't work and I'm asked to enter my PIN.
After entering it, I just get a blank screen and my cursor. I'm able to ctrl+alt+del and have the Task Manager option, but nothing happens if I click it. The only solution up to that moment I know is to Restart while pressing Shift and go into HP's recover app and uninstall the update. After that, I am back to square one and with 21H2 version.
Any other ideas I could try?

Sorry, that didn't work.
There's only one other thing I can think of that you could try and that would be to clean install W11 23H2 by making a bootable USB installation flash drive with the Media creation tool from the link below (2nd option).
Download Windows 11 (microsoft.com)
That would require you to reinstall all of your programs and files and you would need to install the available W10 drivers and software from the support page for any devices that W11 doesn't install.

Might be a huge waste of time if things don't work, but it may pay off just as equally.

Thanks, but for the time invested in doing that, I might as well just go and replace the SSD for a larger one (not sure if motherboard will support a bigger one) and try a fresh windows 11 install ( I have to replace the battery anyway), will have to learn how to migrate my windows 11 license.
And if I'm not able to make it work due to a hardware incompatibility issues, then I could just go back and reinstall the original SSD and find a way to avoid the auto update from windows.
Thanks for the help!

You're very welcome.
You can install a larger capacity NVMe SSD and since the Windows product key is encrypted in your notebook's BIOS you will not need the product key to reinstall W10 or W11.
Below is the link to the service manual:
Looks like HP offered NVMe SSD's up to 2 TB in the model series.
Well, at least your notebook now has the latest Intel graphics driver installed, and you should be able to just run the exe file on future updates or use the Intel driver and support assistant software.
Intel® Driver & Support Assistant
You can try running the Microsoft Hide Windows update utility that I zipped up and attached below and perhaps that will find the W11 23H2 update pending to install and you can check the box to hide the update.
The bad thing about not being able to update is that Microsoft normally only supports the W11 builds for 2 years with cumulative and security updates.
