My windows 10 laptop is apparently compatible for windows 11 upgrade but every time this is applied (sometimes being forced by windows update) the audio device is deleted so i have to uninstall every time and return to winows 10. There is no updated driver on hp support site. Hp envy13-aq0009na. I have extended Windows 10 security because of this problem.

Hi @catsmother70,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I Understand your concern about the audio issue , don’t worry let me help you with this.

Do you see the audio device missing entirely from Device Manager, or does it appear with an error symbol?

In the meantime, here are a few steps you can try:

  • Check Device Manager: After upgrading, open Device Manager and see if the audio device is listed under “Sound, video and game controllers.” If it’s missing, check under “Other devices” for unknown hardware.
  • Run Windows Update: Sometimes, Windows Update will push a generic driver that can restore basic audio functionality even if HP hasn’t released a Windows 11-specific driver.
  • Use Microsoft’s generic driver: Right-click the audio device (or unknown device), choose Update driver, then select Browse my computer → Let me pick from a list, and try installing the “High Definition Audio Device” driver.
  • BIOS update: Check HP Support https://support.hp.com/  for the latest BIOS update for your model. Sometimes BIOS updates improve hardware compatibility with newer operating systems.
  • Rollback driver option: If the device appears but doesn’t work, try right-clicking it in Device Manager and selecting Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver.

I hope this helps.

I'm an HP Employee.
