HP Pavilion Laptop PC 15-eh0000 (9WD45AV)

After some help please community:

I have a HP Pavilion laptop on which the windows 11 update 24H2 refuses to complete.  Its downloads OK but wont install fully.  I have followed all of the troubleshooting guides including running the trouble shooter, running DISM element and  clearing the software distribution file etc but it still gets stuck at the same point 83% into the install and gives the error code 08x800F0801..  I have removed the anti virus software that i had installed and even tried running the Windows ISO option with no success.  There is plenty of space to run the update.

IN addition the USB ports have stopped working except unusually when i use a wireless mouse, and the sound doesn't come through the computer any longer but does when using headphones...... All in all quote unusual circumstances...

Any ideas on how to fix these things and get the update loaded successfully please particularly when i cannot download my work files to a USB stick...

Its running windows 11 home version 23H2 64 bit system.

Thanks in advance!!

Any ideas as to how to rectify this?  Withou

@JRS1967,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

It looks like you're dealing with multiple issues, including the Windows 11 24H2 update failing, USB ports not working (except for a wireless mouse), and no sound from the laptop speakers.

So, let's go through each issue step by step.

1. Fixing Windows 11 Update Error (0x800F0801 at 83%):

This error usually indicates missing or corrupt system files. Since you've tried some troubleshooting steps, here’s what you can do next:

Basic Fixes:

  • Run Windows Update Troubleshooter:

    1. Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
    2. Click Run next to Windows Update Troubleshooter.
  • Enable Secure Boot:

    1. Restart your laptop and press Esc repeatedly until you see the Startup Menu.
    2. Press F10 to enter BIOS Setup.
    3. Look for Secure Boot under Boot Options and make sure it is Enabled.
    4. Save changes and exit.
  • Reset Windows Update Components:

    1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator:
      • Press Win + S, type cmd, then right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
    2. In the Command Prompt window, type (or copy/paste/enter) the following commands one by one, pressing Enter after each:
      net stop wuauserv
      net stop bits
      net stop cryptsvc
      ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
      ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old
      net start wuauserv
      net start bits
      net start cryptsvc
    3. Restart your laptop and try updating again.

Try Installing the Update in Safe Mode:

  1. Press Win + R, type msconfig, and hit Enter.
  2. Go to the Boot tab and check Safe boot (select Network).
  3. Click OK and Restart.
  4. Once in Safe Mode, download the latest Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft's official site.
  5. Run setup.exe from the downloaded file and try installing the update manually.

Advanced Fixes:

  • Check for Corrupt System Files:

    1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator (see instructions above).
    2. Type the following commands one by one, pressing Enter after each:
      sfc /scannow
      DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    3. Restart and retry the update.
  • Check Windows Update Logs:

    • Go to C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther and open setupact.log or setuperr.log to see where the update fails.

2. Fixing USB Ports Not Working (Except for Wireless Mouse):

Since your wireless mouse works, this suggests a driver issue or power management setting.

Steps to Fix:

  • Check Power Management Settings:

    1. Open Device Manager (Win + X > Device Manager).
    2. Expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
    3. Right-click USB Root Hub > Properties.
    4. Go to the Power Management tab and uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
  • Reinstall USB Drivers:

    1. In Device Manager, expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
    2. Right-click each USB device and choose Uninstall device.
    3. Restart -Windows will reinstall the drivers automatically.
  • Disable Fast Startup:

    1. Open Control Panel > Power Options.
    2. Click Choose what the power buttons do.
    3. Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
    4. Uncheck Turn on fast startup.
    5. Click Save changes and restart.
  • Check for HP Driver Updates:

3. Fixing No Sound from Laptop Speakers (But Works with Headphones):

This could be due to incorrect audio settings or a driver issue.

Steps to Fix:

  • Check Default Audio Device:

    1. Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar.
    2. Select Sounds, then go to the Playback tab.
    3. Make sure Speakers (Realtek Audio) is set as Default.
  • Reinstall Audio Drivers:

    1. Open Device Manager (Win + X > Device Manager).
    2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
    3. Right-click Realtek Audio (or any listed device) > Uninstall device.
    4. Restart your laptop—Windows should reinstall the drivers.
    5. If sound still doesn’t work, download and install the latest audio drivers from the HP Support website.
  • Run HP Audio Check Tool:

    1. Restart your laptop and press F2 repeatedly to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
    2. Select Component Tests > Audio Test and follow the instructions.

Final Thoughts:

Since multiple issues are happening at once, the root cause could be:

  • Corrupt Windows installation
  • Driver conflicts
  • A problematic Windows update

If none of the above steps work, consider:

  • Resetting Windows (Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PCKeep my files).
  • Contacting HP Support if your laptop is still under warranty.

Let me know how it goes!

Kind Regards,

I apologize in advance, because I joined in the conversation.

I would like to ask, where do you download the Universal Serial Bus Controllers driver from?

(Because I know, from the official HP website, it does not provide Universal Serial Bus Controllers drivers.)

HP Recommended

@Banlix,

You're correct -HP’s website usually doesn’t provide standalone Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller drivers. Instead, these drivers are included in the chipset drivers or are automatically managed by Windows.

Where to Download USB Controller Drivers?

1. Windows Update (Recommended):

  1. Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  3. Right-click any device with a yellow triangle (⚠️) and select Update driver.
  4. Click Search automatically for drivers.

2. HP Support Assistant (For HP Laptops/Desktops):

  1. Download and install HP Support Assistant.
  2. Run the tool and check for driver updates.

3. Intel/AMD Chipset Drivers (For USB 3.0/3.1/3.2):

4. Official Motherboard Manufacturer Website:

If your HP model has a third-party motherboard (like ASUS, MSI, etc.), check their official support page for chipset drivers.

Let me know if you need help finding the right drivers for your specific HP model!

In the extreme, you could try reloading a clean copy W11 23H2.

ok, thank you sir. For now I don't need it, just asking for preparation, or SSD upgrade.

Hello Non Sequitur 777

Thanks for info.   So here is what happened

Windows Error.  Still no joy. I had done most of what you suggested but tried again… So
1.  undertook troubleshoot.. Windows error detected

2. checked secure boot. Already enabled

3. Reset windows components however when I entered the start commands system said that they had already been restarted….. Why?  How?.

4. Downloaded Windows 11 ISO and tried to run normally.  Downloaded ok but failed on install again at around the same point…

5. Corrupt system files. Done the scan now and DISM before but did again..

6. The windows update logs… the details you advised are not available in my system that I can find when following your instructions…  Can you check and advise on this please.

I have got the sound working and it seems fine.

the usb port one is weird.  I can now hear the pc recognising it has a dong inserted but it doesn’t show anything when looking for it in file explorer… any idea why not??

thanks for the support….

Just to add I have just tried to run it again and again hits 83% and bombs out.  So logic tells me it’s either a space issue or a file its trying to update that it cant.  How can I find an error log that might give me a clue to what is happening??  As I have said the C drive has over 100gb of free space so it cant be a space issue can it???

@JRS1967,

OK, you're dealing with two main issues: the Windows 11 installation failure at 83% and a USB recognition problem. Here are some troubleshooting steps to help resolve them:

Windows 11 Installation Failure at 83%:

Since the installation consistently fails at this point, the issue could be related to corrupt update components, driver conflicts, or hardware problems. Try the following:

1. Check Installation Logs for Clues:

  • Open File Explorer and navigate to [may be "hidden"*]
    • C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupact.log
    • C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setuperr.log
  • Open Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc), go to Windows Logs → Setup, and look for critical errors.
  • Use Reliability Monitor (win+R → perfmon /rel) to check recent failures.

2. Try Installing in Safe Mode:

  • Boot into Safe Mode with Networking
  • Run the Windows 11 setup again

3. Use the Media Creation Tool for a Clean Install:

  • Instead of running the update from within Windows, try creating a bootable USB with the Windows Media Creation Tool and perform a clean install.

4. Check for Storage & RAM Issues:

  • Run Check Disk: chkdsk /f /r
  • Run Windows Memory Diagnostic (mdsched.exe) to check for RAM errors

5. Disable Extra Peripherals & Drivers:

  • Unplug unnecessary USB devices before installation
  • Disable non-essential startup programs and third-party drivers using msconfig

USB Port Recognizes Device But Doesn’t Show in File Explorer:

If the PC makes a sound when inserting a USB device but doesn’t show it in File Explorer, try these steps:

1. Check Disk Management

  • Press Win+XDisk Management
  • Look for the USB drive (it may appear without a drive letter)
  • If found, right-click → Change Drive Letter and Assign a Letter

2. Try a Different USB Port

  • If possible, test with another USB port or another PC to rule out hardware failure.

3. Check Device Manager

  • Win+XDevice Manager → Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers
  • Look for unrecognized devices or error symbols
  • If found, right-click → Uninstall → Restart your PC

4. Run the USB Troubleshooter

  • Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  • Run: msdt.exe -id DeviceDiagnostic

These steps should help diagnose and resolve the issues. Let me know what you find!

* The file "C:$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupact.log" is a Windows Setup log file that helps diagnose installation issues, especially failures like the one stopping at 83%. However, this folder is hidden and may not exist if you haven't attempted a Windows upgrade recently. Here’s how to find it:

How to Access the Windows Setup Logs:

  1. Enable Hidden Files & Folders

    • Open File Explorer
    • Click View (Windows 10) or View > Show (Windows 11)
    • Check Hidden items
    • If that doesn’t work, go to Folder Options → Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files"
  2. Manually Open the Panther Folder

    • Open Run (Win+R)
    • Type (or copy/paste/enter):

      C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\
    • Press Enter
  3. Alternative Location (for Clean Installs)
If you did a clean installation (not an upgrade), logs may be here instead:

    C:\Windows\Panther\setupact.log
  4. Use Command Prompt to Find It
Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run:

    dir /s /a C:\setupact.log

This will search your entire C:\ drive for the log file, even if it's hidden.

Let me know if you can find it!

Kind Regards,
