My hard drive has stopped working and I didn't make a recovery disk.
I have the Windows product key on the base of the unit.
Is there any way in which I can download the reovery disk using this product key?
Many thanks!

Hello;
Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!
There is not a single "Recovery Disk" for HP PCs; instead, there is a set of disks known as HP Recovery Media.
HP Recovery Media is a set of DVDs and a CD, or USB stick, that will erase the hard drive (removing all data, settings, and applications, reinstall the original OS, drivers, and some HP Utilities. In some cases, you may be able to order a USB stick instead of disks. You have to order these from HP; they can not be downloaded.
You can look online for Recovery Media starting with the linked paged: http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers
Once there, input your Product name or number. On your Software and Drivers Download page, select your Operating System and and Version. Click "Update". If HP Recovery Media is available for your machine, down near the bottom of the page, you will see an entry for Order Recovery Media-CD/DVD/USB. Click the "+" symbol to expand that entry and click on Order Media for details.
Or, if you prefer, you can do the same by contacting HP Customer Service:
If you live in the US or Canada, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/phone-assist.html#section1
If you live elsewhere, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.html
NOTE: After you get through, stay on the line until you are finally able to talk to some one -- it can take a while!
If you have trouble finding a phone number, then try: 1 (800) 474-6836
If HP no longer provides Recovery Media for your model, a couple of other sites you can check are: http://www.computersurgeons.com/ and http://www.restoredisks.com/
Before using the media, read through this: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00006110
Good Luck

In addition to the above, if you search for
http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/ software-download/windows7
You will find an iso that may help you get started

Thanks for your reply. I already tried this, but get an error message. The Product Key doesn't work, presumably because the software is slightly different and is bundled with other HP software. Anyhow, many thanks for your advice and taking the time to offer assistance.
Cheers

What is the exact wording of the error-message?
> The Product Key doesn't work ...
Did you enter the product-key from the Microsoft decal on the bottom (laptop) or side/back (desktop) of your computer?
How did you obtain the product-key?

I see:
Order Recovery Media-CD/DVD/USB

The error message is as follows:

We encountered a problem with your request. Please visit Microsoft Support Contact Us page for assistance.
I got the product key from the base of the laptop. It is 25 characters (numbers & letters), and is on a Windows sticker, but is not recognised by Microsoft to find a compatible recovery disk.
Thanks for your help!

The font that Microsoft used for the product-key can be difficult to read. Be sure that you have got the correct characters.

Two things ...
First, Microsoft does not supply Recovery Disks. So, you can not use your product key to download one from Microsoft.
Second, the ISO that Microsoft provides for Win 7 is Retail -- and your product key is HP OEM. So, you can not use your product key to download from Microsoft, and even if you did, you could still NOT use your product key to activate Windows installed from their ISO.
