Hello,

I am trying to reinstall Windows on an HP EliteBook 830 G5 (Intel 8th Gen), and I am stuck at the disk selection stage.

Problem:

During Windows installation, no internal SSD is shown

In BIOS, the SSD is detected

Using diskpart → list disk, the SSD is visible

Only USB drives are shown in the Windows installer UI

BIOS does not expose an AHCI option (Intel VMD / RST is enabled by default)

This clearly indicates a missing Intel RST VMD (F6 preinstall) driver.

What I already tried

Downloaded Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver from the HP support page
→ Contains only iaStorAC.inf (AHCI), no iaStorVD.inf

Tried multiple RST versions, including newer ones (11th–13th Gen)
→ Not compatible with 8th Gen platform

Confirmed SSD is working (visible in BIOS and diskpart)

What I am looking for

I specifically need the Intel RST VMD F6 preinstallation driver for:

Intel 8th Gen platform

HP EliteBook 830 G5

Windows 10 / Windows 11 installer

Driver must include:

iaStorVD.inf
iaStorVD.sys
iaStorVD.cat

Older RST 15.x – 17.x F6 VMD driver packages used to contain this, but they no longer seem to be available on official Intel/HP download pages.

Question

Where can I obtain a compatible Intel RST VMD (F6) driver for this platform?

Is there an official HP or Intel source, recovery image, or driver pack that still includes iaStorVD.inf?

Alternatively, is there a supported way to disable VMD / force AHCI on this model?

Any help or official guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

@afgjhkl876,

Intel RST VMD drivers are for Intel Core 11th-13th gen processors that have a VMD feature.

Intel Core 8th gen processors don't have VMD technology hence IRST VMD drivers are not compatible with your 8th gen processor.

As far as I know, Intel 8th gen processors don't require RST drivers, unless a notebook comes with Intel Optane memory.

If your model has Optane memory, IRST driver shown below should have worked on your model.

HP EliteBook 830 G5 Notebook PC Software and Driver Details

Note that this HP RST driver has the same version number as Intel's latest RST driver for 8th gen processors.

Intel® Rapid Storage Technology Driver Installation Software with Intel® Optane™ Memory (8th and 9th...

Did you extract the 'driver' folder from the above HP IRST driver file and copied it to a usb drive and navigate to the 'driver' folder after clicking on Load Driver in order to detect the storage drive?

The Windows installer has storage drivers for NVMe SSDs and SATA drives. If your model doesn't have Optane memory, the installation setup is supposed to use native storage drivers to detect the drive. If the setup didn't detect your drive, I don't know what the problem could be.
