Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an older HP Notebook which has a built-in slot for DVDs.  Suddenly, it stopped working. Is it true that MS no longer includes a Media Player in their products? Why was it stopped, if true?

No, that is not true.  What Microsoft discontinued in Win10 was their Media Center, not the Media Player.

However, many of us use VideLAN player, as it has a lot more options than Windows Media Player:  http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html

WMP is there in Windows 10 in some fashion but not like before where it could play DVD. That requires a Windows App purchase to have the DVD playback option. VLC works but if you want a authentic visual type player software get either PDVD or WinDVD Pro to support DVD playback options. These last two will cost money to buy to have those features.

Hi,

Please read the following Answer:

As mentioned above, you can use free video players including DVD's and VLC is very good, it can play nearly all video formats.

Regards.

Yes you solved my problem. I tried everything; upgrading to Windows 10, downloading CyberLink, which said MPEG Video not supported, looking for Codecs, etc, trying to restore my PC to original when the Media Player played DVD. Video Lan did the trick. Thanks again.

You solved my problem; nothing else worked. I tried to upgrade from Windows 8 to 10 but failed & wasted hours downloading. Tried something called CyberLink, which was suggested by MicroSoft & reqired a fee then was told I needed Codecs & even tried restoring my PC to a previous date, all for nil. VideoLan solved the problem. I imagine that Windows users around the world were also shocked when without warning, the DVDs stopped playback. Thanks so much!

Thanks but VideoLan seemed to solve my problem. I am confused how the built- DVD player suddenly stopped working after 3 years. Folks told me to download Windows 10 but that did nothing to help.
