HP Envy x360
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My girlfriend bought a new laptop from Best Buy yesterday.  After making sure the OS was up to date, I attempted to install Office 365.  I got a message saying there was not sufficient disk space, strange for a brand new computer advertised as having a 512gb SSD.  So I looked at what Disk Management:

- Disk 0 (C:) is a 32gb drive where Windows was pre-installed, with about 3gb of free space

- Disk 1 (D:) is the 512gb drive that is completely empty

I checked the product box again and sure enough it also lists 32gb of Intel Optane memory.  Since Office has to be installed on the same disk as Windows, that extra 3gb would not cut it, and I am not about to resize any of the partitions for the OS.  I attempted a disk cleanup and, of course, there was very little to be gained on a brand new PC.  Also, to my knowledge, Optane memory is not usually visible as a disk, it just functions as a sort of cashe for programs that are used often not as a place where you can save files (which it is here).

System Specs:

- HP Envy x360 -- 15m-dr0012dx

- 8th gen Intel Core i7

- 512gb SSD + 32gb Intel Optane memory

- 8gb DDR4 SDRAM

- Touchscreen 15.6"

So my question is: Is it possible to fix this arrangement so that the OS is on the 512gb SSD and fix the Optane memory to function as the program cashe that its intended to be?

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

According to the product specifications: https://support.hp.com/in-en/product/hp-envy-15m-dr0000-x360-convertible-pc/26122260/model/27236208/..., it has 256GB of SSD, and 8GB of RAM, no optane memory installed. If it is low on disk space, it's probably because old prefetch/temp files haven't been deleted and if you need space, you can delete them and turn off hibernation mode using the below steps:

· Run the Disk Cleanup tool, and then at the bottom of the window that pops up, click on "Clean up system files". Check everything, hit OK, and let it run. You will free up several GB for sure.

· Another thing to do is disable hibernate file. Run CMD as Administrator, and type the following:

· powercfg hibernate off

· Enjoy your extra space!

The OS cannot be installed on Optane memory, it's only a cache, to increase system performance

And OS cannot be moved to another drive.

Let me know if this helps.

Thank you for the reply @Betty0610

That is interesting that the listed HP specs differs from the laptop we purchased.

Here is a link to the product on Best Buy's site:  https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-envy-x360-2-in-1-15-6-touch-screen-laptop-intel-core-i7-8gb-memory-5...

And the retail packaging which shows the Optane memory as the 32gb variant:

I had selected to clean up system files, and it did not have much to clean up, I continued with it anyway of course.  I've also disabled the hibernate file and that freed up enough space to install Office.  But the question still stands:

Why is the system showing two separate disks?  It clearly displays separate 32gb and 512gb disks, and windows being installed on the 32gb disk.

I will upload screenshots of the disk management screen asap, but I do not currently have access to the laptop in question.

@Uyerion If the device was purchased from a store, chances are they may have made changes to the hardware for promotional purposes or ordered the device with a different configuration than the one shipped from the HP website, that should explain the difference: click here to verify, that said, its possible the OS is installed in the 32GB Drive and the 512 M.2 SSD is empty, available for your storage only.

You may want to check with the store on more details related to the configuration.

I hope that answers your query,
