My laptop crashed during a firmware update initiated by Toshiba software, I couldn't recover it from the recovery software on the laptop and eventually (accidentally) formatted the disk using the recovery software.
I requested a recovery USB (£40+!!!) and used it to get the laptop (almost) working. Now I am being prompted for a Windows Product Key.
The laptop was purchased ex-display so came with no documentation and has no Windows sticker attached. How can I get the key to enter? Would HP have a record, or Microsoft?

I had upgraded to W10 but the recovery has knocked that on the head.
Any help appreciated.

I have the HP Envy and asked HP support via there chat if they had the product key... I spoke to a very helpful chap called Paul.. He emailed me the product key using the model/serial number..
He also said I could try running the from the command prompt (run as administrator)
wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey
This returned the same product key that Paul emailed me 🙂

Just a thought, if you upgraded from 8.1 to Windows 10 before the end of the free upgrade, I believe that Microsoft will allow you to upgrade again and it will activate OK... it is linked to the motherboard...
You may need to use the media creation tool to download Windows 10 🙂
