HP Spectre x360 13.5 inch 2-in-1 Laptop PC 14-ef0000 (3Y838AV)

Since I had been having problems with my touchpad for a while, on 22/12/2024, I tried to update Windows 11 by following the suggested updates.

So I installed “Windows 11, version 24H2”.

I took some time to download and install it and, after a restart, when checking for further updates, I was prompted to install “2024-11 Cumulative Update Preview for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8.1 for Windows 11, version 24H2 for x64 (KB5048162)”.

After these updates my touchpad was still not working; so, after a few days, I decided to uninstall the touchpad driver and have Windows 11 to re-download and install the driver via Windows Update. Windows 11 prompted me to install the driver and when I chose to install it, it seemed like Windows Update got "confused" since it was continuously showing me the button to install it despite I pressed it before … so I pressed the install button for another 3-4 times and then I just decided to restart the machine. The touchpad was still not working but then it start working after a few days.

However now the machine is in a funny state that I don’t understand … Windows Update is not working any longer. Every time I have been trying it in the past 3 weeks it takes ages to look for an update (like 40 minutes or so) and then is returning a weird error message as below :

Error encountered :

Last checked: 28/12/2024, 20:48

“There were some problems installing updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: (0x800705b4)”

Also … every time Windows Update gets stucked with this error, when I restart my laptop, I find that a task in Windows is preventing my machine to be shut down. The message is “Task Host Windows. Task Host is stopping background tasks (\Microsoft\Windows\DeviceDirectoryClient\RegisterUserDevice\) with another message saying “This app is preventing shutdown”.

Kind regards

Hi,

thanks for the reply. As I wrote in my post the touchpad is now fine; the actual problem is Windows update which does not update any more and it continously give error message 0x800705b4

Hi @MauroB1975,

The error code 0x800705b4 typically indicates that the Windows Update process timed out or encountered an issue while attempting to download or install the update.

Here are some steps to resolve this issue:

1. Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter

  1. Press Win + I to open Settings.
  2. Navigate to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  3. Locate Windows Update and click Run.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions and retry the update.

2. Clear the Windows Update Cache

Corrupted update files might cause the issue. Here's how to reset the update cache:

  1. Open Command Prompt or PowerShell as an administrator.
  2. Run the following commands to stop the Windows Update services:

      3. Delete the SoftwareDistribution folder:

Navigate to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution.

Delete all files and folders inside (you might need administrative permissions).

     4. Restart the services:

     5. Retry the update.

3. Manually Install the Update

If the automatic process fails, you can download and install the update manually:

  1. Visit the Microsoft Update Catalog.
  2. Search for KB5048162.
  3. Download the update for your system architecture (x64).
  4. Run the downloaded file and follow the instructions to install.

4. Reset Windows Update Components

Use a script to reset all Windows Update components:

  1. Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
  2. Run the following commands:

       3. Restart your system and try updating again.

5. Check for Corrupted System Files

Corrupted system files might interfere with updates:

  1. Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
  2. Run the System File Checker (SFC) and Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tools:

       3. Restart your PC after the scans complete and try updating again.

6. Disable Third-Party Antivirus

Temporarily disable any third-party antivirus or security software, as it may interfere with Windows Update.

7. Use the Windows Update Assistant

  1. Download the Windows Update Assistant from the official Microsoft website.
  2. Run the tool and follow the instructions to update your system.

8. Check for Space and Network Issues

  • Ensure your system drive (C:) has sufficient free space (at least 20 GB recommended).
  • Verify that your internet connection is stable.

Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a great day ahead!
