I've tried to run windows update when it failed to run I ran the troubleshooter and was asked to 'contact your PC manufacturer to see if you can upgrade the system BIOS' the HP troubleshooter didn't have any suggestions

Check to see if the BIOS version is F.31 Rev.A.
You can find that out in system information, the BIOS itself or the HP Support Assistant.
If it is not, then the link below this line goes to where the BIOS update files are located. Click on the BIOS to see all the other older versions that are available there.
