Hi, so starting a few days ago, my laptop would suddenly switch to a yellow and red static screen. Every once in a while it would turn to a different static screen and would just stay there and I restarted it. Sometimes the blue screen saying to restart would pop up and automatically restart causing me to lose my work. I’ve done lots of virus scans but am not sure how to get this fixed. Is there a way for me to fix this without having to spend a whole bunch of money at a store or is there even any hope?

@Martin387, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

Based on the symptoms and the blue screen error message (VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE), the issue is most likely related to your graphics driver or GPU hardware. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue.

What is VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE?

This error typically means Windows tried to reset the graphics driver after it stopped responding, but failed. It can be caused by:

  • Corrupted or outdated graphics drivers
  • Overheating GPU
  • Faulty or failing GPU hardware
  • Conflicts with recent Windows updates or software

Steps to Fix the Issue

Boot into Safe Mode

If the laptop keeps crashing:

  • Hold Shift while clicking Restart from the login screen or Start menu.
  • Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart
  • Press 4 to boot into Safe Mode

Uninstall Graphics Driver

  • Press Win + X → Device Manager
  • Expand Display adapters
  • Right-click your GPU (e.g., Intel, AMD, NVIDIA) → Uninstall device
  • Check Delete the driver software for this device if available
  • Restart your laptop

Install Latest Graphics Driver

Visit the official HP support site for your laptop model: Official HP® Support

Or use:

Install the latest driver and restart.

Disable Hardware Acceleration (Optional)

If the issue persists:

  • Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics settings
  • Turn off Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling

Check for Overheating

  • Clean vents and fans
  • Use the laptop on a hard surface
  • Consider using a cooling pad

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

Use HP's built-in diagnostics to check GPU health:

  • Restart and press F2 repeatedly to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI
  • Run System Tests > Graphics Test

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!
