Hi @gmgj,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you're seeing the message "You must sign into this device to install updates" despite being signed in, try these steps:
1. Check Account Permissions
- Ensure you are signed in with an account that has administrative privileges.
2. Sign Out and Back In
- Sign out of your account and then sign back in. This can sometimes refresh your session.
3. Check for Multiple Accounts
- If there are multiple accounts on the device, make sure you’re using the correct one to install updates.
4. Run Windows Update Troubleshooter
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, then select Windows Update and run the troubleshooter.
5. Check for System Updates Manually
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, and try to check for updates manually.
6. Restart Your Device
- A simple restart can sometimes resolve sign-in issues or update problems.
7. Use Safe Mode
- Boot into Safe Mode and try to install the updates from there.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thank you. It will take me a couple of days to work through this. I am a retired software engineer. I have done most of these, but I am going to redo them to see if I messed something up. I am working on an issue with my HP Victus as well as my wife's Probook. As for 6, go to Youtube and search for "turn it off and on again" and go to the IT crowd one and see this https://garyjohnson53.wordpress.com/2014/06/29/ya-my-world/ . I hope you smiled.
